His words and his tone warmed her heart and eased her worry some, but only a fraction of an inch. “Yes, you do,” she said. “One who loves you very much and wants you to be safe.”
“I promise nothing is going to happen to me. I’m not Rambo to the rescue here. The team is putting a copter in the air, and soon the state boys will know what to look for. We’re going to catch them, Lucy. I know we are.”
“You’regoing to catch them?”
“I mean the police are going to catch them, with our help.”
“It’s good to hear you say that,” she said. “I worry about you. Please don’t be a hero today.”
He was quiet on his end.
“I’d rather have you be home, than have you be a hero today,” she said. “You’re already enough of a hero for me. Let someone else do it this time. Come back, and let’s do our wedding things like we planned.”
“I’m the only one who can follow these guys right now,” he said. “I’m already on the road they took, following them. Sorry to do this to you, honey. I know you wanted me to help you check the flowers and all that stuff, but you know what you want and I’m just going to say yeah those are pretty. You don’t need my help to check those things. Right now, I have the best chance of catching these guys, until we get someone else near them, following. There’s no one else to do it.”
This time it was her turn to be quiet.
“Love you, babe,” he finally spoke.
Like that makes everything all better.
She paused before answering. “Love you, too.”
Nothing will make everything better. He’s determined to chase them.
She didn’t know of any way to change his mind. Sure, she wanted them to catch the horse thieves, she just didn’t want him to be the one chasing after them, alone.
Stuck with this impossible situation and terrified that something bad was going to happen to him, she didn’t know what to do or to say. She had noticed he wouldn’t promise not to be a hero today.
This is worse than showing up drunk, late to our wedding. This could get him killed. He’s all caught up in chasing horse thieves, instead of thinking about the wedding, and he’s probably even forgotten about his brother.
“Have you told your brother you’re not picking him up at the airport today?” she asked, changing the subject.
“Aw, damn. I forgot about picking Ted up,” he said.
“Do you want me to go pick him up?”
“No, you have enough to do today,” Jack said. “I’ll call Ted and tell him what happened. He can rent a car, which would be best anyhow. He kept saying he could rent one. So, that’s probably what he wanted to do. I was the one who kept saying I would pick him up. Just thought it would be nice to spend more time together.”
“Okay. And I can do the decorations today,” Lucy said. “You just come back safe, and in time for the rehearsal tonight.”
Jack’s phone beeped.
George was calling him back.
“Hey babe, got to go. Another call is coming in.”
“Okay. Love you. Bye.”
“Ditto.”
He switched to George’s call. “Hey, George, what have you got?”
“Buck thinks the thief is a man named Zeb,” George said.
“Has to be more than one, by the prints in the snow,” Jack said.
“Buck says Zeb would take this route, heading to Canada.” George then explained the route to Jack.
