“That’s too bad about Buck. I hope he’ll be all right,” he said. “So that got you worried, and then you started worrying about me? I love you, too, babe. And I am fine.”
She relaxed the way she always did when she was talking to him on the phone. Just hearing his voice had a way of making her exhale any stress she’d been carrying. “I’m glad,” she said. “I know it probably seems silly, me checking.”
“Not silly. Human. Sweet. Caring. But I wish you’d stop worrying,” he said.
There wasn’t any point in arguing that she wasn’t worried, when they both knew she had been, and that was what had provoked her into calling right now, at this time, instead of waiting. When he went on assignments, she worried about all the bad guys out there who had guns.
“I’m fine. I’ve got to go though, sweet,” he said. “Busy working.”
“Okay. Love you,” she said.
“Love you, too.”
They both hung up, and then she laid back on her couch and closed her eyes. That was all she’d needed. To know he was okay, and he loved her.
Everything was good again. And soon they would be married in the perfect Christmas wedding she had always dreamed of. Life couldn’t be better.
