He looked around, unsure where to sit.

“This time you may pick a letter. When the whole class is here, then you’ll each sit on the letter you’re assigned. Do you know which letter you want?”

He found the letter S with the black seal on it and sat down.

“Nice choice,” she said. “Is that your favorite letter?”

He nodded.

“There are lots of things that begin with the letter S. Can you think of a couple?”

“Seals,” he said, with a grin as he looked at his dad.

Travis grinned back.That’s my boy.

“Spiderman, Superman, Strawberry ice cream,” he grinned bigger.

“Those are great “S” words,” she said. “Is strawberry ice cream your favorite?”

“Yes!” he said and hopped up again. “My dad is going to take me for ice cream now.”

“Oh, he is?” She started to rise, and Travis held out his hand to her, but she got up on her own. “Thank you, Mr. Bannerman, but I do this every day, multiple times.”

Three other children and their parents had come in while she was getting up and Travis knew she would need to turn her attention to them.

“Hello,” she addressed them. “I’m Miss Young, your kindergarten teacher.”

“I’m hungry,” Scotty said.

“You wouldn’t be if you hadn’t picked at your lunch,” Travis said.

“Can we get ice cream now?”

“Yes, unless we need to do anything more here,” he looked to Miss Young for an answer as they headed out the door.

“You’re good to go,” she said. “It’s been nice meeting you both.”

So, she’s going to pretend we’ve never met before?

Travis had never lied to his son, and he wasn’t going to start now. There would have to be a damn good reason before he would, and this wasn’t it.

“Good to see you again,” he said.

Surprise filled her face.

Immediately she addressed his son, likely hoping he hadn’t noticed that his dad already knew her. “Scotty, I’ll see you Monday morning,” she said.

“Yes, ma’am,” Scotty said.

He was glad his son was using good manners.

“Ice cream,” Scotty said.

Ellen laughed.

Scotty was out the door and not needing his hand held now, so excited he was almost running down the hall toward the front doors.

From shy to a run. That’s my boy.Travis grinned.
