“I’d like that,” Ellen said. “It’s been a long time since I had lunch with a girlfriend.”

“For me too,” Janelle said. “I’ll ask Leah to suggest a good place for lunch. We can leave after our morning classes.”

“Sounds good,” Ellen said, and she yawned.

“You need to get more sleep,” Janelle said. “Everything okay with you?”

“Yes, I was just up too late finishing the book I was reading,” Ellen said. “I had to find out how it ended. But I’ll catch up on sleep tonight. See you in the morning.”

“See you then,” Janelle said. “Sweet dreams.”

Ellen went on to her room and ran a nice relaxing bubble bath. Thoughts of Travis slipped in while she got into the warm water.

She’d started sleeping better and the nightmares came less often now. Many times, her thoughts turned to Travis in the evening before drifting off to sleep. She suspected that helped to keep the bad dreams away. Sometimes she dreamed about Travis walking toward her in jeans, cowboy boots and his Stetson.

Is he a cowboy? When he isn’t doing SEAL stuff or Brotherhood Protectors things, does he ride and rope and do all those cowboy things?

There were so many things she wished she could ask him. But she only got to talk to him about guns during their lessons. Ellen didn’t see him outside of her lessons because that would have been fraternizing and it wasn’t allowed.

Usually one to follow rules, she really wished she could break that one.

If I were Red, that rule would’ve been broken already. Probably many times.

But Ellen couldn’t be like Red, and Red continued to get on her nerves.

Closing her eyes, she leaned back and forced herself to stop thinking of anything or anyone. She focused on the warm relaxing water and the scent of the lavender bubble bath surrounding her.

This is heavenly.

She stayed until she almost fell asleep, and when the water had begun to cool, but before the water got cold. Now that the bath had made her body warm and relaxed, she stepped out, dried off, and then slipped into warm pajamas.

Still in relax mode and not thinking of anything except how she felt, she got into bed. Her head had barely laid on the pillow when she was off to sleep. It wasn’t long until she was dreaming again of the handsome SEAL who put his arms around her to teach her how to shoot. In this dream, the guns faded, until it was only his warm arms around her, his words whispered in her ear, and his kisses upon her neck.

Ellen wasasleep dreaming a dream she didn’t want to wake from when she was awakened by the sound of gunfire. She sat up in bed, her ears listening keenly.

Gunfire. This wasn’t covered here in our drills, just fire and tornados. Not what to do for a live shooter.

She’d had elementary school teacher training for the event of a live shooter. But still, she was scared.

Ellen wasn’t sure what to do, but she thought moving away from her bedroom window might be the smart thing.

She got out of bed, and grabbing her clothes, hurried to one side of the window past the curtains and then hurried to put her clothes on as her thoughts raced.

The outer walls are thick, made of logs. Could bullets go through them?

She hoped not.

Barrett, Swede, Gunny, and Hank were on the property, guarding it and getting ready for their shift change. They should still be here.

Ellen knew their shifts and schedules because she was quiet and paid attention to such things. She edged over to her door and cracked it, peering out.

“Everyone stay in your rooms!” Gunny shouted to the women.

“And stay away from the windows!” Barrett shouted.

The men hurried toward the front of the building which had been breached.
