“Sure,” he said. “Scotty, grab the mustard and ketchup. You know where they go.”

Scotty grabbed both and ran into the house, leaving Travis and Ellen alone.

“I’d like to take you out on a real date, at a nice restaurant,” Travis said. “Just the two of us.”

“I would love that,” she said. “I’ve wanted to go out with you but been thinking I couldn’t until the school year is over. I didn’t want there to be any conflict of interest or to do anything unethical.”

“So, what do you think now?” he asked. “Dinner? Soon?”

“I’d love to go out with you,” she smiled. “I don’t want to wait. Do you think Scotty will be all right with that?”

“Scotty thinks you hung the moon,” Travis said. “He was really excited about you coming over.”

“I noticed,” she said. “I just wanted to be sure. He might have just wanted to show me his Spiderman room.”

“Likely both,” he said. “So, dinner next Friday night? I’m off work at five and that gives me time to line up a babysitter.”

“Sounds good,” she said.

“Hey, are you guys coming?” Scotty yelled out the door. “We gots dessert.”

“Dessert?” Travis said, surprised.

Ellen laughed and wondered what Scotty had for dessert, which was also a surprise for Travis.

They gathered everything to carry inside. Once inside, they saw Scotty had been busy. Three napkins sat on the table with an oatmeal raisin cookie on each.

“I get to have one cookie before bed, if I’m good, right daddy?” Scotty said, brimming with excitement. “And we gots enough to share with you,” he told Miss Young.

She was too touched to correct him. She’d noticed he tended to say the word when he was excited but when he wasn’t all wound up, he would remember to say “got.”

Sometimes children outgrew such things.

She wasn’t going to be nitpicky when he’d done something so sweet.

“That was very sweet of you, Scotty, to share your cookies,” she said. “Thank you.”

Scotty beamed and then took a bite of his cookie.

After a look from his dad, he said, “You welcome,” with a mumble mouth full.

His dad nodded and then enjoyed his own cookie.

After cookies and milk, Ellen needed to head home. It was time for Scotty’s shower and then bedtime stories.

Though he wanted her to stay, she told him she had to get home soon.

At the door, Travis leaned down to kiss her.

“Oh!” she suddenly said, “I forgot!”

CHAPTER8

What couldshe possibly have forgotten?

He’d intended on giving her a sweet, short, kiss. He’d been wanting to kiss her all evening. Travis wasn’t used to having his kisses interrupted like this.

In fact, this was a first.
