The highway patrolman was here now, parked and getting out of his patrol car, his lights still flashing. The EMT was up ahead at the other car, checking on the driver.
She hoped the driver was all right.
Was the man with the gun trying to kill the other driver? Or me? Did Tony send one of his thugs to kill me?
She had no way of knowing and couldn’t tell the highway patrolman about Tony and the pictures. All she could do was say she’d seen the man with the gun. Maybe that would be enough for them to find him.
He’d caused the Porsche to crash, and she had been lucky. Because her brakes were totally gone. She’d tell the patrolman that too.
But she couldn’t mention Tony. Though she wanted to. She really, really wanted to.
Thank God she was uninjured.
If the man with the gun had been sent by Tony, she had to get away, soon.
Because he might try again.
Cold chills ran over her entire body, and she started to shiver.
“Ma’am,” the patrolman leaned down to look closer at her. “You may be in shock. We have an ambulance coming. Just sit tight. I’m going to talk to the other driver.”
The ambulance came, but she refused treatment. She had already gotten out of her car and stood outside of it, waiting. She couldn’t just sit there in that car forever waiting on them to look at her.
“I’m fine,” she told the EMTs. “It just shook me up at first.”
After the policeman had talked to the other driver, and written some things down, he came back to look at her car. He got inside and checked a few things.
“Is the other driver okay?” she asked.
“The other driver is fine. Your rental car however is not,” the policeman said. “Your brake line has been cut.”
“Oh no!” she said, her eyes wide.
“Do you any idea who might have done it?” he asked.
“No,” she shook her head. “That is crazy!”
“If you think of anyone, even have a slight suspicion, let me know. I’ll file a report,” he said. “But it’s unlikely we’ll catch whoever did this.”
“It’s okay,” she said.
“We do our best. I just don’t want you to expect too much.” He frowned. “This kind of thing can be hard to prove. So, if anyone comes to mind, even if you think there’s no way they’d really do it, tell us. Often it’s the people you know who cause the most harm.”
I could tell him who I think ordered it done. But there is no way.
She shook her head. “I don’t have any names to give you,” she said. “I’m just glad I wasn’t hurt, and that the other driver is okay.”
“I’m glad too.” The policeman smiled. “Your rental car company will provide another car,” he said. “But you’ll have to go to their office to sign new paperwork and pick up another car. Do you want a ride to their office once we’re finished here?”
“No,” she said. “I want a taxi.”
“I’ll call one for you,” he said.
“You’re very kind,” she said. “Thank you.”
“Happy to help,” he said.
After the taxi came, she got in and directed the taxi driver to take her to the nearest truck stop on the route heading west.
