“Good,” Sadie said. “We can celebrate after you get here. Keep me posted on where you are and call if you have any trouble.”
“I will,” Marilyn said. “And thank you.”
“No need to thank me,” Sadie said. “Stay safe and I’ll see you soon.”
“Yes. See you soon!”
It was going to take a while to drive all the way to Montana. Tony would never find her there.
Her phone rang.
Tony.
“Hello Tony,” she answered.
“Marilyn,” Tony said. “You were supposed to call me after your audition.”
“Yes, that’s right,” she said. “It hasn’t been that long. I just left. Oh, and I got a part in the movie.” She merged with the traffic, and someone honked at her.
“Be careful. I wish you’d let me give you a driver,” he said.
She insisted on driving herself and it was one of the things they disagreed on.
“I am being careful,” she said.He had no idea.
“We’ll celebrate tonight, at the restaurant,” he said.
“Okay,” she said, keeping her tone normal. She would go along with whatever he said until she was out of town. Hopefully he wouldn’t notice anything was off until she was out of his reach.
“Six o’clock,” he said. “Be ready. The car will be in front of your apartment at six.”
“Okay,” she said.
He has no idea I’ll be long gone out of town by the time the car arrives at six.
“Oh, and Marilyn. Wear that red dress I like.”
“Sure,” she said, thinking of it hanging in her closet. She needed to donate that thing. Because she wasn’t ever going to wear it again.
“See you tonight, babe,” he said.
“See you Tony.”
They hung up and she briefly thought of turning off her phone, but she needed it for the GPS, so she couldn’t. She turned up the radio and moved on down the road.
Less than an hour later, Tony called again.
“Hello?” she answered, wondering what he wanted now.
“Marilyn,” Tony said, “Where you goin’?”
“Just shopping” she said. “I’m going to treat myself.”
“Shopping?” Tony’s low laugh gave her a chill. “I don’t think so. I know where you are. And you’re not shoppin.’ What are you doing, Marilyn? You’re on Hollywood Freeway, by exit 12, B Ventura Boulevard heading north.”
Her jaw dropped.
He knows exactly where I am.
