“Bitch, if you keep doing that, someone is going to end mopping up milk!” I cry out as Billy’s fingers jab into my side again. A squeal tears from my mouth as I cry mercy, the Beta reaching for another round. Billy and Adeline have been at it for the past five minutes, trying to drive me out of my funk, and it’s working.

Unfortunately, we’re currently on the clock at one of the most elegant cafés in our city and should probablynotbe doing whatever we’re doing. Adeline finally tugs Billy off of me, planting a firm kiss to his cheek. “Darling, I think we got the point across.” Billy grins and sags against her side, the love between them shining just a bit too brightly for my taste. She strokes his cheek once before turning her attention to me. “As for you, Mila, fuck Nolan. He was a bastard anyway.”

I open my mouth to fight her on that, but she just shakes her head.

“No, I’m not sugarcoating it. You called me crying your eyes out last night until we convinced you to come over with a wine bottle. Absolutely not. We have no idea how our boss gave birth to a kid like that.”

That makes me snort. “Addy, our boss is anAlpha. He didn’t give birth to anyone and Nolan is adopted. Or well, our boss is his stepdad so they’re not even really related.” It’s been a source of tension between me and Nolan since we started dating. It’s not like I needed to meet his father—myboss, but it was weird that they never talked.

Me and my parents didn’t talk because they wanted an Alpha. Nolan avoided his father because he didn’t get a position atEpicurea. The problem was that Nolan didn’t have an artistic bone in his body. He would have fucked up everything Mr. Holt had done for the brand. Still, Nolan not being an adult about the situation was one of many reasons we broke up.

The main one?

Finding Nolan balls deep in an Omega in our bed yesterday afternoon.

The fucker still hasn’t apologized and now my car is stuffed with everything I own so that I can stay in a motel this evening. If Adeline knew that, she’d be furious I didn’t ask to stay at their place.

“Earth to Milaaaaaaa,” Billy sing-songs as he jabs me in the side again.

I swat at him and then grimace as the milk I have been trying to protect falls to the ground. My heart sinks into my stomach as the white liquid gurgles out onto the floor, despair flooding my chest. I’m not even sure why I’m breaking down again. I’m not sad anymore. Just angry.Veryangry that I spent so much time on an Alpha that doesn’t even care.

A sob tears from my throat, Adeline already moving as she drags me into the back. Billy’s on his knees starting to clean, my attention stolen away by the Beta crushing me to her chest. “Hey,hey, you’re allowed to break, Mila. You went through a lot.”

“Being cheated on by my boyfriend—”

“No, shush. Absolutely not. We’re not diminishing what he did. That was yourfiancé.We all saw that ring a few weeks ago, even if you didn’t wear it very often.” Adeline pulls back from me, looking down into my eyes. I wish I were attracted to her and her husband, Billy. They’re the perfect couple, and they’re so caring. She caresses my cheeks in her hands before placing a kiss to the bridge of my nose. “Now, I’m going to make you one of those funny little hot chocolates you like, and then you’re going to take a fifteen.”

“I can’t.” My brows furrow as I smack at the tears that escaped, not wanting to be a burden. “And it’s not fair that Billy is cleaning up everything.”

“He poked you, so yes, it is. Besides, I’ll make it up to him later. Also, Mila, I’m the manager, remember? Now, go sit at one of the tables while I make that sugar abomination.”

A nervous laugh falls from my lips, and I nod, trudging out into the main area of the café. It’s always dead just before the lunch rush, everyone completing last-minute tasks. I barely make it to my favorite table in the corner when one of the ‘Suits’steps into the café. They never come down here from Floor 15. They always send an assistant, someone bright-eyed and bushy tailed to pick up and then deliver.

Whatever this ‘Suit’ needs must be important.

Internally, I curl into myself, wondering if Nolan said something to his father that would get me fired. They don’t talk but maybe Nolan was petty enough this time? I’m still mulling over the billion reasons why my job is in jeopardy that I nearly miss the ‘Suit’ calling my name.

“Mr. Grey?”

I perk up, eyes wide at the Alpha standing way closer than he was before. “Ye-es?”

“Your services are needed on the 15thfloor.”

“Am I getting fired?” I grimace, realizing that’s the worst thing to ask.

The man’s face scrunches up and then he shakes his head. “No, but a little haste in your step would be appreciated.”

“Right, right.Of course.” I pop out of my seat just as Adeline steps out from the counter with my hot chocolate. I merely shake my head and follow the ‘Suit’, wondering what could possibly be so important that they needme. I don’t even notice that I’m mumbling to myself until the ‘Suit’ grunts, and then I bite my lip to keep from making any further noises.

This has to do with Nolan, right? There’s no other reason. No one on the first floor is ever called up to the fifteenth. Not even to get fired. HR is on Floor 3 so…

“Mr. Grey, I’m going to need you to take several deep breaths.” The ‘Suit’ hands me a small vial and I frown at it until I realize the brand of scent blocker that most Omegas can only dream of. My face bleeds heat as I screw open the cap and then slab a healthy amount over my gland to control my pheromones.

The rest of the ride up the elevator is made in silence.
