“Been around enough to know, have you?” Solo drawled, his nonchalance fake, though Kaz doubted anyone else could tell. Aside from him and Jane.
“And what if I have?”
Jane stood, crossing her arms under her breasts, effectively drawing Solo’s attention to them. He couldn’t tell if they were flirting or fighting. Maybe both? Either way, his friend was fucked.
While the two of them went back and forth, Kaz caught Emma’s gaze across the room. She tipped her head toward the meeting room, and he stood to follow her inside, pressing a quick kiss to Miles’s lips before crossing the room.
He closed the door behind him and found Emma waiting for him with her arms wrapped around her middle, her expression almost haunted.
“What’s going on?” he asked.
Emma sighed, her expression unreadable as she said, “It’s Emmett’s ex. He’s causing trouble, and Travis and I have very different opinions on how to handle it, especially because Em doesn’t seem to realize there’s a problem.”
He didn’t like the sound of that at all.
He put a hand on her arm, catching her gaze, and held it as he spoke. “You say the word, and we’ll be there.”
A soft smile spread on her lips, and she put a hand over his, squeezing once. There were tears lining her eyes, but he knew she wouldn’t let them fall.
“Thank you,” she said, her voice cracking.
He pulled her into a hug, sensing she needed it. She buried her face in his shoulder and held on for a long time, and he happily let her. He rubbed a hand up and down her back, hoping it would soothe her even just a little.
“Are you okay?” There was clear concern in Miles’s voice, and Kaz looked up to find him in the doorway, gaze trained on his sister.
Emma pulled back with a deep breath and turned to Miles, a small smile finding her lips.
“I’ll be fine,” she said and slammed her fist against Kaz’s shoulder just hard enough to make him grunt. “I just needed a hug from a friend. You know, the friend you’ve completely stolen away?”
Miles huffed, shaking his head.
“It didn’t take much,” Miles said, his lips twitching.
Emma gasped, hand going to her chest. “How dare you. Oh, the betrayal. By my own brother, no less.”
She turned to Kaz, who shrugged and said, “Don’t expect a different answer from me.”
Emma rolled her eyes and flipped them both off, her low laugh not alleviating the tension one bit. It was clear Miles didn’t believe her, but he didn’t question her further as she walked out of the room, leaving the two of them alone.
The second the door closed behind her, Miles’s gaze snapped onto Kaz.
“She’s not okay,” Miles said, leveling Kaz with a hard glare.
He released a sigh, unsure what to tell Miles. It wasn’t exactly club secrets, but it was clear from Emma’s words and actions that she didn’t want her brother to know.
“It’s something she’s figuring out. She’ll be alright.”
Miles watched him with a wariness in his eyes he didn’t like, and when he stepped toward him, Miles took a matching step back, shaking his head.
“I should get to work,” Miles muttered and turned to walk out the door.
There was no way in hell he was leaving it like that, so he caught up with Miles before he could grab the door handle, fingers wrapping around the man’s wrist to tug him around.
“Do you want me to break your sister’s trust?”
The words came out harsher than he intended, and Miles’s responding wince felt like a knife to the chest. Fuck. He was an asshole.
Miles shook his head and met Kaz’s gaze head-on. “No, of course not. I just…”
