Love me.

He loves me.

I don’t deserve it.

Hide. Save yourself. No love here.

A cold scoff emanates from my lips. I don’t mean it, but I need to use it.

“Adrik, really. Look at you. Look at me.” I pause, allowing his overactive mind to draw conclusions. “I am the huntress.”

“Myhuntress.” He says it in such a tone that my resolve wavers.

Deliver the blow.

“And what are you?”

He takes a deep breath to fight me, but no words come. I wait, dying as he flusters for ground to stand on. He doesn’t see all the amazing things I see. He doesn’t know the man I know. It’s a fucking shame.

“See?”

I stand, the betrayal in my bones hard to ignore. I have to move or it’ll eat me alive.

“You’re not a man who can travel with me.”

The words feel like acid.

Brisha bites my boot and shakes her head with a growl. I kick her free as gently as I can.

“Keep the dogs. You need them more than me.”

I walk from the room with fire in my soul. Not one that makes me strong, but one that makes me less. It’s eating me. It says I’ve made the wrong choice.

Well, I haven’t.

Adrik is more useful here.

I don’t need him.

Fynren does.

I don’t need him.

Chapter fifty-five

Adrik

Liar.

I turn to the breakfast on the nightstand and roar at it. The eggs don’t care she’s rejected me. I eat them. I eat all of them because I know I still need it. If I’m ever going to be accepted in her crew, I have to be big, strong, and hardy. I can’t be…this.

Me.

Fuck. What if she’s right?

Brisha barks at me and I’m so tired of pups needing to go outside but…

“What?” I ask her.
