“You heard me. You want me on that throne, you’re going to have to join me.”

His eyes track between mine, confusion knitting his brow. “But I am your guard.”

I take a deep breath, finding my courage. “And I’m asking you to be my husband, too.”

A choked gasp is his only reply.

Fear, thick and heavy, constricts around my gut. “You don’t want me?”

Red blazes in Alastair’s eyes and he devours my words in another kiss. “I don’twantyou, Lilianna. Ineedyou.” He bites my lip and then attacks my mouth again, his tongue forcing through my teeth.

I whimper against his assault, and he breaks away, pressing his forehead to mine. “I need you like the sky needs night and dawn. I am empty without your light and darkness to fill me. I find joy and delight in you, wonder and awe. You inspire me to do more, bemore.”

He kisses me again and I fight to match his passion.

“I do like your jokes. I love the way you grin when you’re about to be indecent, my little imp. I think you’re brilliant, powerful beyond measure, and more than worthy. You’re everything: my heart, spirit, and future. I would be honored to be your husband.”

I kiss him slowly, loving the way he matches the depth of my desire. “Take the very last piece of me, Alastair,” I say, tightening my thighs around his hips. “Become my king.”

Chapter twenty-seven

Alastair

Wife.

It’s not a word I ever dreamed I would use to describe Lily, but it feels more right than anything I’ve ever known. I wrap my arm under her ass and hold her tightly against me as I stand, still locked deep in her lover’s kiss.

“Where are we going?” she mumbles against my lips.

“You think I’m going to make love to my queen in the middle of a forest where I’ve just dismembered a man?”

She smiles and there’s a hint of darkness in it. “The blood of our enemies makes beautiful paint.”

I grunt at the sudden flash of erotic imagery and my demon stirs.

No. Not for our first time.

I combine inverted Kai and Kor’Tar’s bloodshed to clean us while keeping a steady pace back toward camp. Lily whines indignantly and I realize I’ve been slowing my affections. Walking, magic, and kissing all at once might be too much for one man.

“Alastair.” She says my name like a question as her lips wander a path down my neck.

“What is it, princess?” I ask, cradling the back of her head as I relish the attention.

She pulls back and I stop in my tracks at the serious look in her eyes. “I love you.”

I smirk. “I know.”

Her brow pulls together in a scowl. “What?”

I clear my throat and continue walking. “Apologies if my earlier declaration was not clear enough. I love you, too.”

She nips my jaw. “No, you fiend. What do you mean, ‘I know’?” she mocks in an excessively low voice.

I huff in amusement. “You told me when you were drunk. I nearly died from not breathing.”

She nips me harder, her scowl deepened. “And you didn’t think that fell under ‘anything else I should know about’ when I asked the next morning?”

I catch her chin between my fingers and lock my eyes with hers. “I thought you’d said something you didn’t mean to say. I didn’t want to embarrass you, and I…” I swallow against the knot of fear in my throat. “I didn’t want to hear you take it back.”
