Four legs of teal power burst from Scarlett’s back and cocoon her, blocking Lily’s attack. The gust blows up between them, knocking the wooden signs of the businesses we pass and causing window shutters to slam.
“Well, that’s new,” Scarlett says as the cocoon peels away from her. “What is that and when did you learn it?”
“You first,” Lily demands. “I thought you were a nomaj?”
As did we all…but her power is not her own. It’s easy to see it’s the same as her man’s—Zane’s. The Spider Lord wears a ghost of a smile as his magic flexes.
Scarlett shrugs. “I thought so too, until Mother’s assassin tried to stuff his dick down my throat before killing me. The fucker had the gall to say he’d spare my life if I sucked him off.”
These princesses and their filthy mouths…
“Okay, what does sucking him off have to do with it?” Lily asks.
“Language,” I grumble down at her.
She grunts at me in annoyance. “Ugh, Alastair, please. I’m with my sister, a lord of the Underbelly.”
Scarlett seesaws her head. “I’m calling myself queen, actually. Never thought I’d like the title until I realized how terribly it gets under our mother’s skin.”
Queen…but she can’t possibly want to—
“Alastair, stop,” Lily says, pulling me from thought before I’ve even arrived at what I’m sure she’s grousing over. We’d discussed the idea that I might have to kill Scarlett to get Lily on the throne, and if the eldest sister is seeking it now…
Lily jabs me in the ribs. “Alastair, what did I just say?”
Zane looks over his shoulder at me and his gaze says everything. He’d kill me to protect Scarlett. He’d kill Lily, too. He’d killeveryonefor Scarlett. I know the look well because I wear it every day for Lily.
I run my thumb up the side of her neck and kiss her temple. “Apologies, wife.”
“Aww, that’s sweet,” Scarlett simpers, pulling her feet up as she shrugs her shoulders.
The teal legs of magic continue carrying her, holding onto the rooftops and walls. She moves like a spider. It’s unsettling.
“Okay, back to the blowjob. So, I cut off his balls instead, and his blood spray happened to get into my open mouth while I was screaming. I swallowed some of it as I was running for my life and next thing I knew, my body was absorbing his magical power, which was shadow melding.
“He pushed me from the tower—
“Wait, how did that happen?” Lily asks. “You let yourself get cornered in your own castle?”
Scarlett sighs. “Gods, I’m never going to get through the story. Yes, forgive a fourteen-year-old girl in a panic forrunning to her bedroomfor safety. May I continue?”
“Yes, you may,” Lily says, and I can’t help but smirk.
“He pushed me and as I was falling to my death I just thought, I wish there was a way out of this. Suddenly,POOF!I was shadow and then I was solid again on the ground.”
I scowl. That sounds a lot like Trask’s magic. “Did you need line of sight to move about?”
She arches a brow at me. “When I become shadow—” She disappears in a blink, once there and then gone. “I can be everywhere there is darkness.”
Her voice behind me raises the hairs on my neck and I whirl. She’s already gone. My demon roils beneath the surface, but I keep him caged, just barely.
“I try not to multi-magus too often, but I wanted to be ready for a fight if Alastair decided he wasn’t having any of it,” Scarlett says as she appears ahead of us once more.
She stops at the entrance to a tavern and waves us inside. “After you.”
“So, you drink blood and get other’s magus powers?” Lily asks, her eyes alight with excitement as she steps into the tavern.
“Not just blood, little sis. But I’m past all that now. I can absorb magic through touch,” she says, then runs her hands over her hair. It shifts from red to black where her hands move, spreading Lily’s green magic. She shakes her black hair around with a bright smile. “You like?”
