Fixing things is what I do.
It’s over.The mission is over, and we finally took out a huge ring that was distributing dangerous Fentanyl to criminals all over the country from the Larkin factory. I feel relieved and stressed that this is over, as well as my career with the ATF.
I still don’t know where Mellie and I stand. I couldn’t have told her anything even if I wanted to. I’m not sure what everyone is going to think of me now, or if I’ll be welcomed back around Freedom Valley or the inn, but I have to at least try to make things right.
I am a mechanic at heart, having grown up with my dad teaching me how to fix anything and everything. I’m a fixer. It’s what I do. I don’t know if I can fix what I broke with Mellie, but nothing is going to keep me from trying. I’ll do anything to make it right. Somehow, they’ve become my entire world and I can’t be without them now.
Special Agent Taylor approaches me and shakes my hand. “Are you sure you’re making the right decision?”
“Never been more sure, sir.” I shake his hand firmly.
“How can we thank you for your service? I know the past few years have been a sacrifice.”
I think about it for a minute and say, “I do have one thing you could help me with.”
“You can have whatever you want at this point. You name it. You’ve been an asset to the ATF.”
I fill him in on the details of my request and then turn to head out. “Thank you,” I call as I head over to my truck to make a few calls. I reach for my phone and text her. I just hope she gives me a chance to explain everything.
She texts me back, and my heart drops.
Mellie
I’m going back to the garden shed. I need some time, Ty.
Ty
Don’t go. Please let me explain.
Mellie
Not tonight. I’m exhausted, and I need to think about everything.
Ty
Can we meet tomorrow?
Mellie
I don’t know.
Mellie
And Ty?
Ty
What?
Mellie
I have Nova. Please don’t make Kase give her back tonight. He’s lost enough.
