Her face softens and she pulls me in for a longer hug. “I’m trying,” she whispers.
“I know you are. Someday you’ll truly understand you’re safe with me.” I pull her close again, feeling like we both need a hug.
This day has been a weird and long one, but I’ve also never felt more like a family with anyone. It takes being sick to realize that you need other people, and they need you. And it feels good to be needed and wanted. I think some people are meant to be a husband and father, and I’ve always felt in my bones that I am one of them.
Whatever the circumstances are, I care about Mellie and Kase now. They matter to me.

This is where we’re meant to be.
“I seeyou’re back among the land of the living, honey,” Margie says as I walk into the kitchen in search of some much needed coffee. “How are you feeling?”
“So much better.” I hug Margie.
“Make sure you take breaks and stay hydrated,” Margie says in her motherly tone. “Take care of yourself.”
“I will. Thanks.”
“Any plans tonight?” she asks.
“Just checking in on the gardens and getting some extra rest. I’m glad no one else here got whatever we had.”
“Let me know if you need any help with Kase. I could use some help emptying my cookie jar.” She winks at me before going into the kitchen, not even bothering to wait for a response.
I pop in my headphones and play my audiobook as I set off to work.
I hit the jackpot with the inn. This is where we’re meant to be.

I can’t stop thinking about Ty all day, wondering how he’s feeling and when he works next and when we can spend time with him. I really liked taking care of him, and I liked him taking care of us. I send him a text message to check in on him.

How are you feeling?
Ty
Good, how about you guys?
Mellie
Good, just finishing up work, then I’ll be home.
Mellie
I mean at the bunkhouse.
Ty
This IS your home, Mellie.
I smile hearing him say that. I like the thought of the bunkhouse being our home with him. I want to come home to his hugs and get more of our stolen kisses.
