“I miss you,” I add quietly.
“I know, beautiful. I’m coming home tomorrow. Did you get my flight information? I can’t wait to see you.”
“Yes, I’ll be there. I can’t wait for you to see everything we’ve done so far for the festival. It’s going to be amazing.”
“You’re amazing,” he says.
“I may be just a little amazing,” I shoot back playfully but with a sense of confidence I haven’t felt in so long.
“I can’t wait to show you how grateful I am.” God, I hope Margie isn’t around to hear any of this.
“Okay, well you still need to rest. I’ll play nurse for you.” I try to be serious but a laugh escapes.
He laughs back until his tone gets serious.“So Allie says she’s going to try to move back now that Caleb has had his surgery. I can’t wait for you to meet them… I mean, if you stay,” he adds.
I avoid replying directly because I’m not sure how to answer right now, so instead I say, “That will be great for you to have them closer.”
“We have a lot to still talk about when I get home,” he says quietly.
I change the subject because I know where he’s going with this.
“Did you hear anything about Hamilton? Logan’s coming for the weekend and he’s bringing his friend Preston, the lawyer. I wanted to talk to him more about all of this. Are you okay with that?”
“Of course. I trust you. Let me know what he says. Also, I have some new information about Hamilton, but I’ll share all that with you tomorrow when I see you.”
“Okay, Ev. I can’t wait to see you tomorrow.”
“Me, too. Bye for now.”

When Logan and Preston arrive, I give Logan a hug and shake Preston’s hand. “I’m so happy you both came. Come in,” I say, relieved to have them here.
Logan smiles at me. “You look good, Beth. Happy.” He sets his bag down by the front desk. He doesn’t look happy.
“It’s nice to finally meet you, Preston.”
Preston smiles at me. “Nice to meet you, Beth. Don’t mind old grouchy here. He just found out his lady has become ‘exclusive’ with someone else and he’s a little cranky. He needs this getaway, bad.”
“Oh, no,” I say, looking at Logan. “What happened to Jennifer?”
“It was Jessica. And she wanted to be serious and I didn’t, so she found someone else to be serious with.” He shakes his head and looks away. I can tell he’s upset but trying to save face in front of Preston, so I make a mental note to ask him more about it later. For now, I play along.
I stare at Logan, trying to figure out what to say. “Were you not ready to be serious with her? I thought you had been together for a while.”
“We had fun. But I’m just not the settling down type,” he says.
He’s definitely a bit of a playboy, and I’ve never known him to be serious with any woman. He comes from money, yet he is a total workaholic and doesn’t have time for much. We get along well because we both work a lot and have the publishing world in common, but he’s still one of my best friends and I’m worried for him. I lean in and give him a hug, his arms reaching around to hug me back.
“What’s this for?” he says.
“I’ve missed you.”
“Missed you, too. Can’t wait for the tour of this place. It looks incredible.”
I get them both checked into their rooms and hand them their keys, then they each head to their rooms to get situated before dinner. Sasha’s been cooking up a storm and the aromas have been teasing me all day.
Before dinner, I head over to the cottage to grab the dogs and bring them to the inn for the evening. The guests generally enjoy playing with them, and of course, so does Kase.
