"No problem," he said.
Alexis took Devon's hand and before I realized what she was doing she ran the sharp blade across meaty part of his palm, cutting deeply.
Devon hissed, pulling his hand away and curling his fingers around the dripping wound.
"Alexis!"I gasped, shocked.
Wordlessly Caden handed Devon a handkerchief and Devon wrapped the square of cloth around his hand tightly to help stop the bleeding.
"What was the purpose behind that?"Devon asked calmly, his hand fisted around the cloth .
"Morgan?"She asked, barely glancing in his direction.
He nodded sharply, silently confirming whatever she was asking.
"It was a test."She said to Devon.
"A test of what?"
"One that would confirm or deny what I suspected."
Devon lifted one brow at her, questioningly.
She turned to Detective Bolser."Do you feel anything?"
He made an unhappy face, thinking for just a moment before shaking his head."No."
Alexis turned back to Devon."You have the talent to lend and borrow energy."She sounded certain.
"And that means?"Devon wanted to know.
"That means that you feeding Nickie energy while she healed wasn't something gone odd with your mating, it was just one of your talents.It never occurred to me until Morgan said I pulled energy from you."
"Then why this?"He lifted the still fisted hand she'd cut.
"To see if it went both ways."
I didn't get it and it must have shown on my face because she explained.
"We needed to find out if you could borrow someone else's energy, or if you were limited to just loaning it."
"And by cutting his hand?"I prompted.
"By cutting him, I created a reason for his body to need more energy.I brought Detective Bolser close so that he would have a source easy to borrow from," She smiled at the man she'd set up to lose energy."so we could see it more easily."
"So I've been giving and taking other people's energy?"Devon sounded dismayed.
Alexis nodded slowly."The upside is that for the most part it has been on a very low level, not even enough to notice, like the detective said."
"What am I going to have to do to stop stealing other people's energy?"
"Learn to shield.Good shields will stop the unintentional transfer of energy.Once you have those, we can arrange to have someone train you on how to use your talent deliberately."
"All right."Devon nodded."I can do that."
"Remind me once we get home and I'll make arrangements."
"I'll do that.Thanks, Ali."Devon wrapped his good arm around me, pulling me against his side as Alexis nodded and went to go talk to Ridges.Morgan turned to go wait by his car and Detective Bolser looked at the two of us for a few seconds before wandering away into the nearby trees.
