“We should go,” she whispers, letting her hand fall back to her side. She stares at her phone as she taps out a message, and two seconds later, mine buzzes in my pocket.

“You lead the way.”

She skis slowly for my benefit, and even if I didn’t have an ulterior motive, going home seems like a wise idea. Despite being in one of the most magical places I’ve ever been, it’s hard to enjoy it when my thighs are burning, and my feet are desperate to get out of these heavy boots.

“Are you sure you’ll be OK getting back to the house?” she asks when we get to the lift station. For a woman who has tried to keep me at arm’s length all morning, I half wonder if she wants me to ask her to come back with me. But I need her out of my hair if my plan is going to work.

“I’ll be fine. You go meet your family and I’ll see you when you get home.”

“Enjoy your work,” she says, waving me off.

Oh, she has no idea how much I’ll enjoy this. It’s very important work, indeed. The work of getting her to confess how much she wants me.

Laundry Day

Oh fuck, what are you doing?

I didn’t… that’s not what I meant…

No, we can’t do this.

Seriously? Right here in the basement? Anyone could walk in.

Are you sure?

OK. OK. Yeah, you can take it out.

(Sigh heavily)

Open your mouth.

Jesus, fuck. Well, aren’t you a surprise?

(Bite lip and moan)

Yeah, just like that.

Look up at me.

You think you can take it all?

You look so fucking pretty on your knees like that.

Chapter 11

Hannah

Wehadplannedtomeet up with Ryan and my parents for lunch, so after making sure Cameron gets on the correct lift home, I spend the rest of the morning cruising around on my own.

I won’t allow myself to miss him. Sure, it’s a little quiet without his constant chatter, but I need a break from feeling so on edge around him. Plus, I can ski further and faster on my own.

After a quick stop for pizza, the four of us catch lifts and ski together, just like old times.

“How did you meet Cameron?” I ask Ryan on our last chairlift of the day. It’s an open two-seater that carries you up to the highest peak you can access without taking your skis off and hiking. Every year, Ryan and I get in a dumb contest to see who can make it back to the bottom of the village fastest. I know I have the edge since he hasn’t skied in three years, and it shows.

“We were in film school at the same time. I needed a sound guy for a short I was working on, and a mutual friend put us in touch. Then we both ended up working for the same studio.”
