Oh my God.I knew we were too loud.

“I can’t babe, because if I admit it to you, I’ll have to admit it to myself and we both know that me having regular sex withhimwould be the worst thing in the world.”

“Didn’t sound that bad last night,” she smirks.

“What are you doing?” I ask, changing the subject and peering at the phone in her hand. “Are you watching hockey player videos again? It’s 7:30 in the morning.”

“Listen, a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do to stave off a breakdown,” she says. There’s humour there, but you can’t always tell with Megan if that sarcasm is hiding something more difficult.

“What’s going on?”

“Just the usual end of year drag. Summer holidays can’t come soon enough.”

“What do you have planned?” There had been a mention of going to see Max but now that’s all off I can’t see it happening.

“Nothing,” she sighs. “Six weeks of silly little walks for my silly little mental health.”

Nah, I’m not having this angel wasting her life away moping over some guy who was never good enough for her in the first place. “Maybe we should take a trip? That could be fun, you and me and a whole load of sun, sea, and sangria?”

I hardly ever take time off work, but with everything up in limbo maybe now would be the best time for it.

“Hmm, maybe. Do you think you could tear yourself away from your boyfriend?” she teases, laughing as she hops up to get ready for the day.

“Fuck you,” I tease back, but there’s a lump in my throat that tells me leaving him for a week would be far from easy.

Chapter 34

Hattie

I’mleavingmyThursdayboxing class on an endorphin high when I hear his ringtone.

“What do you want?” I snap, even though I’m smiling.

“Do you want to spend the day together on Saturday?”

“Doing what?”

“I don’t know. Whatever we feel like.”

Would it be inappropriate to suggest I spend the entire day sitting on his face?

“Why?”

“I don’t have plans, and I like hanging out with you.”

“Oh, so I’m your last resort?”

“No, Hattie. You’re my first. There’s nobody I’d rather spend my free time with.” I bite my lip and attempt to ignore how fast my stomach flips.

“I have to work.”

“It’s the weekend.”

“There are no weekends in advertising.”

“Can I at least take you for breakfast? Maggie’s? Promise not to eat into your day too much.”

Dammit. He’s got me there. I’m a sucker for Maggie’s French toast sticks and he knows it. “Fine, you can take me out for breakfast.”
