I climb back on top of her, but instead of resuming my previous position, as fun as it was, I straddle her chest. My knees pin her arms, and I grip the base of my dick and thrust forward, brazenly pushing it into her mouth. Her eyes go wide but she doesn’t fight it. Instead I feel her warm tongue stroking the head before she hollows her cheeks and sucks so hard it makes me want to come instantly. “Uh, just in the middle of a workout. You?”

“Supermarket. If Kara and I do a roast tomorrow, can you join us?”

“Will Hattie be there?” I keep the phone to my ear, but in such close proximity, I know she can hear him, too.

“Yeah, why?” Luke asks.

“Oh, just so I can make sure I’m completely irresistible. You know how much I love to get her all riled up.”

“She asked the same about you, you know. When are you going to quit this bollocks and just tell her you like her?” Her mouth and eyes fly wide open in shock.

Fuck.“OK gotta go mate, text me the time!”

I end the call and when she tries to speak I push in further, sliding past her tongue to the back of her throat. I withdraw a little and let her catch her breath.

“You like—”

“Shut up.” I push back in.

She’s not getting the satisfaction of thinking she has something on me. I reach behind me and bury two fingers inside her. She tightens around them and tries to buck me off, but it’s a half-baked effort, and I glide in and out of her mouth, watching her squirm. She scratches her nails down my thighs, and I yelp, pink welts blooming instantly.

“You’ll pay for that,” I growl, climbing off and flipping her over.

“Make me,” she laughs, pressing up onto her hands and knees.

Sometimes sex with Hattie is a stroll in the park on a summer’s day. Sometimes it’s war. A fierce battle for control, where it’s a miracle we both make it out without having broken the bed. This is one of those battles. She bites me and I bite back. She grips my dick so hard I’d swear she was trying to remove it. The flat of my palm meets the curve of her ass and she cries out, then begs me to do it again.

Afterwards, we lay breathless, sweaty, tangled together. The moment I shift to face her, she does the same.

“You like me,” she laughs sleepily, running a fingertip from my forehead down my nose to my chin. It’s an unexpectedly intimate gesture from Hattie. I float my eyes closed and commit it to memory, then gather my strength and lift her over me until she straddles my face.

“Let me show you exactly how much I like you.”

Lunch is an awkward affair. Hattie makes me drop her off, then circle the block for ten minutes so it doesn’t look like we showed up together. I should have expected as much, but it pisses me off, and when I finally‘arrive’I find everyone around the garden table underneath a blue and white striped parasol. The seat next to Hattie is the only one vacant and I sit and pour a glass of iced water.

Kara and Luke keep disappearing to whisper in the kitchen, and Megan is glued to her phone, which is extremely unlike her.

“Who are you texting?” Hattie asks across the table.

“Nobody,” Megan replies, shoving her phone into the pocket of her cardigan.

“I don’t believe you. Have you joined a dating app?”

“So I could trawl through your cast-offs? No, thank you.” Megan laughs, but I feel Hattie stiffen beside me and she looks away as she sips her wine.

“Hey,” I snap. “That was uncalled for.”

“I’m sorry,” Megan says, her cheeks reddening. “I didn’t mean it how it sounded.”

“It’s fine,” Hattie shrugs. “We all know what I’m like.”

I haven’t had the urge to look at an app since our situation began. Now I’m wondering if the same is true for her, though to be honest I don’t know when she’d have the time, given how often she’s in my bed these days.

“If you must know,” Megan says. “I’ve gone viral.”

“What do you mean, you’ve gone viral?” Hattie says, sitting up and leaning in.

“One of my Year 10s took a photo of my comments on their homework and now it’s on the front page of Reddit.”
