“I told him I’d already swiped for a hookup and he was furious.”
“Had you?”
“No, I genuinely wanted a good night’s sleep, but when he turned up I was naked, and that was the second time he’d seen me naked and—”
“Excuse me?” she interrupts.
“That’s a story for another time. Anyway I’d had enough to drink that I told him to strip so we’d be equal.” Megan takes her fist between her teeth and groans. “We argued about it for a bit but eventually he gave in and he’d just started going down on me when you rang about the keys.”
“I’m sorry, what are youactuallysaying to me? I rang you mid-coitus?”
“Well, pre-coitus. I know, you saved me.”
“Oh my God, Hattie. Nobody should ever stop receiving oral sex to answer the phone. You idiot,” she whacks me through the duvet cover. “I’d have figured something out.”
“No. No, I’m glad you rang. It was a bad idea, in a bad moment, after too much booze. I’d have regretted it if we went any further.”
“Would you really though? From what I gather he must be pretty good in bed.”
“Please, he’s all mouth and no trousers Megan.”
She snorts. “Well you’d know.”
Megan grants my wish for a bacon roll, and after a shower and a second coffee I feel mostly human. We head over to Moonshine to pack up all the wedding decorations, as promised, before the afternoon staff arrive and open up properly.
Rob sidles up next to me at the bar where I’m wrapping church candles in tissue paper. He gets stuck in and wraps a few and I ignore him until we reach for the same one, my fingertips grazing the back of his hand.
“So, are we going to talk about last night?”
God please no.“The wedding? Yes, it was wonderful wasn’t it? I think a good time was had by all,” I singsong, meaning no, we definitely aren’t talking about it.
“No,” he leans in close. “About me fucking you with my tongue and then you running out on me.”
“For fuck’s sake Rob,” I hiss. “Megan is right over there, keep your voice down.”
“She knows,” he laughs and I whip my head around to face him.
“What the fuck did you say to her?”
“Nothing, but I can tell you did from the way she looked at me when I arrived. I’m surprised,” he says, his voice low. “I thought you’d want to keep me your dirty little secret.”
“What? No! I mean, yes, I do. I don’t want anyone else to find out about this. And anyway, nothing happened.”
“I’m just going to take these jars out to the car,” Megan calls over from the doorway.Cheeky cow.I know what she’s up to, and I do not want to be left alone with him.
“I’ll help,” I say, desperate to get away from him, but Rob grabs my wrist and pulls me into his arms.
“If nothing happened, how come I can still taste you?”Fuuuuck.
“Please stop. I’m going to be sick. Just hurry up and tidy so we can get back to our respective homes and never see each other again.”
His jaw drops, eyebrows knitting together. “Why won’t you see me again?”
“The wedding is over. Our work here is done. There’s no reason for us to be in each other’s company.”
“Except the fact that we’re friends? Or that our best friends just got married? We’re hardly likely to never see each other again.”
“We are not friends, Rob.”
