Find Bec.
I leap out of bed, throwing the door open as I rush down the hallway, calling her name.
“I’m here,” she calls back from the kitchen.
She’s here, oh thank fuck.“What are you doing up?” I bark at her, fist rubbing away the pain behind my sternum.
“Not all of us are on a night shift. I’m guessing youdidn’tsleep well?”
“You’re supposed to be resting. Not...” Whatisshe doing? “Are you cooking?”
“Just some sandwiches Sarah dropped off. I thought you’d the energy for beating up the kids.”
“That’s the exact opposite of self-defence classes.” I scoop her up from behind and carry her through to the sofa. “You sit your ass down.”
“Rennie stop,” she bats at my arm wrapped around her waist. “I’m honestly fine. I can almost put weight on my ankle without the crutches now.” She tries to get up and show me, but I push her back, lifting her leg to rest on the footstool.
“Almost isn’t good enough. You heard the doctor. If you push it, you’ll take longer to recover.”
“OK, jeez, calm down. I was just trying to help.”
“I’m supposed to take care of you, remember?” I say, pointing my finger close to her face. “Not the other way around.”

Wow,Rennieinbrutemode sure is something to behold. I don’t know whether to be afraid or turned on. I mean, obviously it’s the latter because Rennie looks the way he looks and I’m not afraid to indulge in a sexy grump fantasy from time to time. He huffs like a bull and storms off, back to where I’ve left our sandwiches toasting under the grill. I cross my arms, stick out my tongue, and sulk back.
“I can’t just sit around and do nothing. I’ll go insane.”
“So go insane,” he booms from across the breakfast bar.
“Why are you being so mean to me?”
“I woke up, and you weren’t there. I thought you were gone.”
This idiot.“Where would I go? I can’t walk properly, I have no car. Oh god,” I throw my hands up, “that reminds me I still need to call the insurance people. But that doesn’t explain why you’re acting like a bear with a sore paw because I left the room for four minutes.”
“I am not.”Oh shit.I see what’s going on here. Rennie woke up, I was gone, and he freaked out.
“Ohhh, I get it. You missed me.”
“No,” he grunts.
“Rennie,” I tease, drawing his name out. “Why are you freaking out on me?”
“I’m not,” he says, but he refuses to look at me while he plates up our food. I study his face while he brings everything through. His jaw is set firm, but I see that telltale tick.
“OK, maybe I am freaking out a little bit. Look, I just—“
“What’s going on?”
He lets out a slow sigh. “I’ve never done anything like what we did last night, either. That’s not a thing I do with lots of people.”
I gasp out loud and throw my hand to my face in mock horror. “You’re a virgin!?”
“No,” he chuckles softly, “and I’m sorry implied that you were. I just never see you with anyone.”
