I nodded and for a minute, silence dragged on between us.

“Should I... go now?”

“Yes, I guess so,” he said hesitantly.

This whole meeting had been strange so far, but there was something in his tone that was even stranger. It was like he wanted to keep speaking to me but didn't know what to say. The way his gaze seemed to search his desk for a distraction and his hands fidgeted on the stack of papers again was almost surreal to see.

Mr. Kort was always smooth and confident. Or so I'd thought. What could possibly make himfidget? Especially when it came to little ole me.

I stood up, still confused and went to the door before pausing and turning to look at him.

“Thank you,” I said.

He nodded and for a moment the stern boss I knew was gone entirely. His face was open and unguarded, and he almost lookedsweet.

I stepped out into the main office area and had to just stand there for a moment, processing before I shook myself back to reality.

“How did it go?” the secretary asked in a whisper.

I shrugged helplessly.

“I don't know.”

Chapter Six

SAL

The moment the door closed behind Clay's back I groaned and buried my face in my hands.

“Shit,” I muttered.

I'd completely lost my cool.

Knowing that he was the guy from my anonymous chats seemed to have rewired my brain. It was suddenly like all those conversations had come straight from that pretty mouth. I could imagine his dimpled smile, his messy blond hair as he pushed it out of his eyes, all the while typing those messages. I wanted to be myself with him.

But he didn't know me, so I also wanted to hold back.

“Ugh.”

It was nearly the end of the workday anyway, so I held off messaging him until after I had shut everything down and had my jacket on.

So, how did it go? You still have a job?

You wouldn't fucking believe it.

I grinned at his immediate response. I hoped that my little offer had made him happy.

I got a raise!

No way!

I'm going to buy a PS5.

I laughed, just as the door to my office opened.

Bill popped his head in, saw the bright smile on my face and whatever he'd been about to say was instantly forgotten.

“What the hell has you so happy?” he asked.
