My jaw drops as his words sink in. I find it hard to believe, and I wait for the catch that’s inevitably coming. It can’t be real. There has to be some hitch.
The hounds’ tails wag happily at the news, and the Dark Lord sits patiently awaiting my answer.
“You just want me to … watch them?”
“Yes. Watch them, care for them, keep them entertained.” He gestures at the hounds. “I care not how you do it, just that they’re kept happy and healthy. The means of such would be up to you.”
Oh, I can think of plenty of ways to keep the hounds happy … “Thank you, My Lord. I would gladly accept this task.”
His scaly lips spread in a wide grin. “Excellent.”
The hounds jump up and place their front paws on my chest, licking my face with glee. I take their leashes as the Dark Lord dismisses us and lead them back to my home.
“You know, if I didn’t know better, I’d say you two planned this.”
Mordac snorts, and Tyrac pants in a canine grin. Both tails wag, and their pointed ears perk up.
“Well, it looks like I’m stuck with you for a few centuries. What would you like to do to pass the time?”
The air hums with demonic magic as the hounds shift to their human forms.
“I think we can find some way to occupy your time, Lady Nyx …”
I shut the door to my chambers, eager to begin our centuries of fun.
The End
