“Sure…” he said slowly. “Good luck.”
I nodded to them both. As I turned away, I heard Neil ask, “Who was that guy?”
“Luno,” Taylor said weakly. “I was only using him to make you jealous.”
“Well, it worked,” Neil laughed.
When I glanced back at them, Neil’s arm was around Taylor’s back, and they were walking toward the balcony.
I was pleased for them, but even happier because now Robin couldn’t turn me away.
I had fulfilled my duty. Now he owed me that conversation.
I found him bent over the dessert table, rearranging the flower-patterned cupcake tower. In the clean-cut suit the servers wore, he looked lovely. Perfect for a date to the ball, even if he matched the other workers. When Robin turned around and found me sliding up behind him, he gasped and dropped the empty trays in his hands.
They hit the floor with a loud clatter that could easily be heard over the band and stood there like I was a specter, his hands over his mouth.
“You promised me a talk,” I said.
Slowly, he lowered his hands. I could see them trembling. He swallowed, gazing around the room, anywhere but at me.
“Where is Taylor?” he asked.
“With the man that he loves,” I said and in case he needed reminding added, “As am I.”
Robin’s gaze flew to mine.
Suddenly, tears filled his wide eyes.
“What?” he asked, and peace settled over me as I fully understood.
I swept forward, pulling him against me, engulfing him in a hug in layers of tentacles, my arms firm around his narrow waist, holding him steady. I lowered to his level, bringing us face to face.
“Was our lovemaking not enough? Did you need more proof?” I asked gently. “Then let me say it loud and clear. You are my Sul. I have searched for you for lifetimes and now that I have found you, I have no intention of letting you go. I love you and always will.”
He took a deep breath and pressed his forehead to mine, squeezing his eyes shut.
“Now,” I said. “Will you please take the night off of work and take your rightful place as my date?”
Finally, he nodded.
“Okay,” he said, laughing through the tears. “Yes.”
He pressed his lips to mine and if anyone was watching, I had no idea. All I cared for was the man in my arms.
Chapter Thirteen
ROBIN
Luno swept me onto the dance floor. All eyes were on me, including Stan’s. I briefly glimpsed him in my peripheral, staring with wide, panicked eyes.He wasn’t prepared to lose a server.
It didn’t matter. Nothing mattered to me but Luno.
I had created something to worry about because I was so used to being second place. Now, with his hand in mine, and his eyes fixed on my face, his expression filled with love, there was no more room for doubt.
Even with Taylor at his side, I had been the one he chose.
Luno pulled me into his arms, and it felt like the world realigned itself.
