I fell back on the pillows, shaking my head, then lifted my phone, typing a quick reply.

Chapter Eleven
ROBIN
I chewed my thumb, watching from just inside the entryway as Luno arrived.
Cleaned up and ready for a classy ball in a lovely black robe that made his skin and tentacle colors pop. He was breathtaking. Around me, I heard people gasp as he glided to the bottom step.
I smiled. He had that effect everywhere he went.
And Taylor looked fantastic as well. He was a good canvas to begin with. Whenever he cleaned up, he turned heads. As Luno swept up the steps to the landing he was waiting on, taking his arm, they made a striking pair.
The smile dimmed on my lips as I watched them come up the stairs toward me.
Luno caught me watching them first, his gaze landing on me like he’d known I was there all along. My heart stopped for a second and the next, Taylor saw me, grinned and waved enthusiastically.
I forced a smile and steeled myself as they neared.
“How is everything?” Taylor demanded, taking one of the wine glasses I was holding. My eyes didn’t seem able to look away from Taylor's hand on Luno’s forearm. Even though hewore long sleeves, and they weren’t technically touching, I was fixated on it.
“Robby?” he asked.
“Uh… Yeah, good so far. Looks like everyone is having fun. It looks beautiful.”
He beamed.
“Everything really came together,” he agreed, then looking up at Luno excitedly, he tugged him along. “Come see!”
Luno smiled at me warmly, but he allowed himself to be pulled away and—it was like a knife to the gut. Like I’d imagined everything that had happened between us. Hours making love to the alien must have been a fever dream. He never held me and entered me, whispering about being soulmates and wanting to keep me forever.
My hands started to shake a little bit. Hastily, I handed off the drink tray to one of the others and beelined for the toilets.
I sat on the back of one and pulled out my phone, rereading all our messages for the millionth time. Luno had seemed so sincere. There was no reason to doubt him—except that I’d pushed him into Taylor’s arms.
If Taylor could resist him for longer than an evening together, then he would have to be made of stone. And Luno… after pushing him away like this, it would be a wonder if he still wanted me at the end of the night. Why would he when he could have Taylor?
What the hell was wrong with me?
I went back onto the floor.
Immediately, Stan spotted me with nothing to do and directed me to hand out appetizers.
I got to it regretfully, hopefully keeping a cool exterior as I walked through all the happy guests. The music was loud enough that I didn’t have to talk to anyone. I avoided the dance floor, but every now and then when a slow song started, I glanced towardit, seeing if Taylor and Luno were dancing, arms around each other.
They didn’t seem to be out there.
When I saw them, they were talking to the other organizers. Taylor was laughing and still holding onto Luno’s arm.
I’d thought I would be okay with seeing them together, but something in me felt like it was dying.
If Luno didn’t come find me at the end of the night like he’d promised, I didn’t know what I would do. It didn't feel like I would ever move on without him.
