“You never caught wind of what happened to him?”
I laughed bitterly.
“As soon as he went missing, I started presenting as an omega. Things got dangerous after that. I had to lay low to protect myself.”
How could I openly say what happened next? How did I explain that with some guidance from other street omegas, I’d started to take alphas to satisfy my heats and theirs whenever I could?
I looked up at Coal, met his sad eyes and found that all the necessary words left me.
Surely, I’d said enough. Coal could piece the rest together… I didn’t need to explain only to make my mate sadder.
“Come on,” Coal said. “Let’s go home.”
The rough tone of his voice coupled with the look in his eyes made me think he wanted to hold me again. I hoped that was the case because I was quickly becoming addicted to being in his arms. And while I had enjoyed being taken around by him, being out and about hindered getting the things I really wanted, like cuddles.
Coal didn’t say anything as he paid but he kept looking at me, his gaze dark and sad. I knew he was thinking about everything I had told him, probably imagining what it had been like for me.
I wondered what it would have been like had Coal found me out there. My fated mate appearing on the street to sweep me away. For some reason the thought nearly brought tears to my eyes. It was too much of a fairy tale. Maybe I needed to be at rock bottom to believe this was real.
We stepped outside, into the chill spring air and suddenly Coal’s arms came around me, pulling me into a bear hug that I hadn’t thought I needed. These were old wounds after all. But the moment I was pressed against that strong chest, pain stabbed straight through my heart like it was fresh.
I took a shuddering breath, sucking in Coal’s comforting scent. I should stop poking at that old wound, wondering what had happened to Foster.
Coal pressed our foreheads together, holding my face, stroking my cheeks and then lips with his thumbs. When he tilted and kissed my lips, I felt like I’d been waiting an eternity for it. I pressed in hungrily and the momentary passion of our lips crashing together and tongues tangling soothed and distracted me from the mess my life had been.
I didn’t mean to bite down, but my teeth cut into Coal’s bottom lip.
He groaned and with a sudden push, flattened me against the side of his car, moaning as he deepened the kiss, pressing down on me with his hips and hardening cock.
I gasped, arching up into him, eager for more when Coal’s phone started ringing.
Neither of us stopped right away. Coal kept kissing me, nipping my skin, and I clung to him, my hands drifting to the alpha’s muscular ass, squeezing him through his jeans.
Coal sucked my bottom lip, a heated growl rumbling in his throat. He rocked his hips against mine a few more times—but I could feel his thoughts starting to race. I pushed his shoulders gently and, with a heavy sigh, he dropped his head onto my shoulder and reached into his pocket.
An unknown number lit the screen of his phone.
“It might be about Asha,” he said.
“Answer it, quick.”
Coal did, holding it to his ear.
“Coal Kent speaking.”
He fell silent as a woman’s perky voice carried to my keen ears.
“Hello, I’m calling from the Lunar City Bank to return your call from this morning.”
Coal stilled, seeming to consider what to do.
“Can I call you back in about twenty minutes?” he asked.
“Yes, I’ll be here for another hour,” she said.
He hung up with a soft groan and bent his head down, breathing me in for a moment.
“I’ll still be around when you’re done talking to her,” I reminded him. “This is important.”
