“It’s okay,” someone said softly, and my entire being turned into giddy mush. What a sweet voice. Soft mid-tones, a touch of command, and a touch of fear. It seemed to vibrate through him.

I wanted to see him.

Without thinking, I shifted into my human form. With some effort, I managed to roll onto my back.

I caught sight of my omega’s figure, lean—skeletal, I remembered with a flash—olive skin and dark hair, but before I could see his eyes, or take in any of his features, the room kept moving. And moving.

“Ugh.”

My hands gripped the fabric I was lying on, willing everything to stop.

Eventually, I cracked my eyes open, andfinally, I was able to see him.

My omega was striking, with large, fiery eyes, thick brows and lashes, and dimples that were visible even without a smile. Despite his sweet scent, his gaze was sharp, his lips a tight line, arms crossed where he leaned back against a wall, watching me warily from a distance. He was different from the usual omegas I was exposed to, and even more exquisite.

“Beautiful,” I whispered.

The omega blinked slowly but didn’t otherwise move.

A hint of anxiety spilled from him, carried on his scent. Unable to read his expression, I tried to sit up. And promptly fell back down, flat on what I now realized was a bed—no. A gurney.

I reached a hand out to the omega.

“Come here.”

The omega’s gaze fixed to the floor. He didn’t move. After a moment, he spoke.

“Do I have a choice?”

I didn’t even know what to say for a moment, I was so caught off guard.

“What?” I asked. “Why wouldn’t you?”

The omega gave me a long, searching look beforefinallypushing off of the wall. He took the few steps toward me as though walking a plank.

My arm was still extended, eager to feel the other man. He didn’t seem towantme to touch him… but that didn’t make any sense. We were fated, weren’t we? The omega had to know it as well as I did. Either way, as he came close enough to reach, the room seemed to dip, and I grabbed on without thinking.

The omega gasped as he was yanked to my side.

I fell flat on my back and for a moment, I lay very still, my arms around my omega’s slight waist. I had to squeeze my eyes shut and wait, even though all I wanted was to look at my fated mate, hold him and breathe him in.

“What’s wrong with me?” I groaned, eyes still squeezed shut.

“They had to tranquilize you,” the omega said. “Remember?”

They? Who werethey? I could think of nothing past this immediate moment. I waited until everything settled and I could open his eyes again to ask the details, but then my gaze settled on the man I was clinging to and nothing else existed.

A smile lit my face, wonder filling me as my heart swelled.

“I’m Coal Kent,” I said. “I’m a fighter for the league.”

A smilealmosttouched the omega’s lips but faded before it got there.

“I know.”

“What's your name?” I asked when he didn’t go on.

The omega stared down at me. He was trying hard to control his emotions, but I could sense his shifting scent. Tension, fear, and something else, something like desire, mingled as he stood there in my almost embrace.
