“What about Asha?” I asked, cutting to the chase.

“I’ll tell you anything you want to know,” he said, eyes slightly wild. “I’ll tell you where she is.After.”

My heart jumped into my throat.

Coal would hate this.

Ihated this.

But.

This was my last chance at the life I had been teased with. And hadn’t I slept with more alphas than I could count? What was one more?

I bit my lip and stood.

“Just a couple hours,” I said. “And I want money.”

Lambert lit up and reached out, grabbing me by the wrist harder than necessary, as though he thought I was going to take off.

I allowed myself to be dragged across the street and into my old haunt. My eyes darted around, heavy with the feeling that my shame was being watched. I didn’t see anyone though, just the usual figures sitting on vents and the odd business person hurrying by. The bell jingled as the heavy glass door swung shut on its hinges and the familiar moldy smell of the carpet hit me and nearly made tears spring to my eyes.

This was not what I had seen happening upon escape from the cells. I’d happily thought this part of my life was behind me.

For coal, I found myself saying silently. For Asha.

The receptionist, a bone-slim beta who was missing half of her blackened teeth, caught sight of me and grinned.

“I thought you’d be in the bottom of a ditch by now!” she laughed. “Where you been?”

Lambert, my alpha of the hour dropped money on the counter and snatched the key she offered, pulling me to the stairs before I could think of an answer.

“Come on,” he muttered gruffly. The smell of his rut, his arousal, was growing with each step, the anticipation clearly turning him on, but it was making me feel sick.

I stumbled on the top step, nearly falling, but he didn’t care, dragging me along, showing his nasty nature once more.

“Hurry up.”

When we got to our door, his scent was overwhelming, and tears started to blur my vision.

Fuck. I can’t do this.

Lambert didn’t notice my hesitation though, pulling me into the room with a groan and tugging me against his body, to rut his hard cock against me.

His scent waseverywhere, and the lovely, comforting smell of Coal would be washed away by this man that I didn’t even know.

“Stop.”

He didn’t seem to hear me.

“You smell likehim,” he growled. His fist gripped my hair, yanking my head back as he sniffed my neck.

His eyes blazed orange. Alphas didn’t like when their lovers—temporary or not—smelled like other alphas.

“Have you two been fucking recently?”

Shaking, I lifted my hand, pulling my collar down to expose Coal’s bite mark, still fresh and slightly tender to the touch.

“Of course,” I said proudly. “Coal is mymate. Not you. Now get your hands off me. I changed my mind. I can’t do this.”
