I took a deep breath and attempted to keep my composure while I explained. I didn’t want to get mad again while my mate was currently taking my knot and had nowhere to go should he want some space.
“She was stolen from me for ransom. I was meant to lose that fight to get her back. They put a lot of money on it.”
Finally, my member slipped free from Ember’s hole as the swelling began to go down. I felt an odd mix of relief and disappointment at that. I didn’t want to have this talk while we were stuck together but, at the same time, it just felt sogood.
Immediately, Ember pushed me back and sat up, peering down at me with a strange look in his eyes.
“You chose me over your own family?” he asked.
Swallowing, I shook my head.
“No,” I admitted. I reached for Ember’s hand and held it tightly. “I had no control over my actions when I saw you... If I’d been thinking straight, I would have lost the fight and then contacted the league officials about buying you afterward. It would have been great to leave with both you and Asha at my side... Although, I doubt it could have gone any other way. When I saw Lambert in the cage with you, I lost it.”
Ember let out a trembling breath.
“What are you going to do?” he asked.
I shrugged helplessly.
“Whatever I have to do to get her back.”
ChapterEleven
Ember
Coal was nothing like I had thought he was. He was the epitome of an alpha, that was true, but he was also kind, caring, and considerate. He had a bigger heart than anyone I had come across in my life—that wasn’t saying much, but still, it was refreshing to meet someone who was actuallykind.
How had I stumbled into this, a mate, a bond, a mark?
It was such an overwhelming change that it seemed too good to be true.
We were sitting in the kitchen. Coal was cooking me breakfast, his sweats hanging loose on his hips and round ass. I couldn’t help staring at his back as he moved, the way his muscles flexed.
Coal turned and, catching me watching, he paused and then sauntered toward me with a pleased smile.
I chuckled, hiding my face before a plate was placed on the table in front of me.
“Does it look good enough to eat?” he asked, and I was pretty sure he wasn’t addressing the eggs because he winked.
“Yeah,” I said, cheeks heating. “It does.”
He smiled, his eyes narrowing in that hungry way that made my mouth dry.
“Eat up,” he said.
I nodded, distractedly taking a bite, and immediately, I forgot about the suggestive conversation in favor of another pleasure.
I moaned, devouring each bite.
“Wow,” Coal breathed. “I can’t wait to see you eating somethingactuallygood.”
I looked up at him, then down at the last of my toast, realizing how quickly I’d torn through it.
“I haven’t had a hot meal in months,” I said. “This is probably the best thing I’ve ever eaten.”
Sadness filled Coal’s eyes, but determination quickly struck out the pitying emotion.
“Then I’ll make sure you never have a hungry belly again.”
