He glanced over at Nikolai, his heart filling with warmth.
His mate who, upon realizing what was happening, ran to be by his side for the ordeal. He had come back at just the right moment to offer his warmth and love and Soren had never felt so close to anyone before.
He snuggled up to him, pulling him against his chest and relishing the feel of his slight body. He was so smooth and warm. His skin felt softer than any silk and Soren pressed his face to his neck, inhaling his scent.
“Thank you,” he whispered quietly.
“For what?” Nikolai asked sleepily.
Soren hadn't meant to wake him, but he lifted his head to look down at Nikolai while he rubbed his eyes.
He looked tired and when their gazes met, Nikolai's were troubled.
“What is it?” he asked.
“The fight,” Nikolai said, half smiling. “Please don't tell me you forgot about it.”
Soren glanced toward the entrance.
The smallest bit of light was filtering through already. That wasn't good.
“I didn't forget,” he said truthfully, but somehow, it wasn't scaring him the way that it used to.
To fight Kamon for the pack was one of the most important things he would ever do in his life and yet... in light of Jin's passing, he couldn't help but feel that it wasn't as important as just being with his loved ones.
Still, he would give everything he had—save his life, to win.
Suddenly the nerves came, a little flutter of them through his stomach. He released a deep breath, seeking that peaceful calm again. It was gone though, swiftly being replaced by everything else.
If Soren became alpha, he would do everything that he could to keep things as they were. He would respect his friends and pack members. He would be firm in their rules and morals but easy with them in all other ways.
If Kamon won, on the other hand, Soren had no clue what would happen.
Suddenly he was out of bed, pacing as his mind raced.
Kamon had nearly killed Andrey. He had been so untrustworthy that Soren had been afraid to leave while Jin was ill for that ball because he'd been afraid Kamon would try to kill Jin and make it look like natural causes. If he'd done that with no one there to challenge him, he would have been automatic pack alpha.
Was that the type of person that Soren wanted to lead him?
The answer was simple, Kamon had to be punished. He would not punish himself. He might not even punish Eri for nearly killing Nikolai.
Suddenly, his melancholy, passive way from the day before seemed insane.
He turned to Nikolai who was now sitting on the edge of the bed watching him with wide eyes.
“What is it?” he asked.
“I must win,” Soren said at once. “Imust.”
To his surprise, Nikolai grinned.
“Good! That is the attitude you need Soren.” He jumped to his feet. “I saw Kamon's eyes. He is out for blood. You need to be ready for that, ready to give all of your strengths to—what? Pinning him?”
“Until he either can't fight anymore or submits,” Soren said.
They exchanged a look and then Nikolai said what Soren was thinking.
“He won’t submit.”
