Soren watched him closely though, just in case, but Alpha Jin seemed to be in good spirits with more energy than Soren had seen him with in a long time.

True to his word though, after he had nibbled on fresh fish and drank a full bowl of soup, he waved to his guards to help him.

Before leaving, he patted Nikolai on the shoulder where he had taken a seat next to Soren again.

“Welcome to the family,” he said, smiling warmly. “You are where you belong.”

Perhaps it was the sure way he said it, but Nikolai’s gaze glazed over with tears.

“Thank you,” he said shakily.

No sooner had Jin departed, than Botan took his place, dropping into the seat at Soren’s other side.

“It looks like things with your human are working out after all,” he said, smiling. “Fusa says you two are fated. Why didn’t you mention that?”

“We all doubted it,” Soren said. “Myself included when he left.”

“Yes, well, you might want to finalize the bond now so that no one can argue again.”

Soren glanced over, finding Nikolai staring at them, openly listening to their conversation.

He grimaced but tried to hide it.

“This is my friend, Botan,” he said.

Nikolai shook his hand, smiling.

“Nice to meet you,” he said, but his eyes kept going to Soren’s face.

“None of us ever expected Soren of all people to make a life bond on a whim,” he said, chuckling. “But I’m glad it worked out.”

“Would you call it a life bond?”

Soren glanced up, not realizing that Homare, EriandKamon were sitting so close, listening to their conversation.

“The way I see it, Nikolai is still fair game, right?” Homare went on. “After all, the bond isn’t complete.”

Soren glared when the others laughed.

“Now, now,” Botan chastised.

Soren didn’t even know why they were so bitter. Yes, Eri’s plans of getting him had been ruined, but considering that she was currently hanging off of Kamon’s neck it looked like she had already moved on.

“Our alpha approves of Nikolai, and he is my fated mate,” Soren said firmly. “Do you plan to fight me on it?”

The three of them grimaced.

“No, I won't fight youyet,” Kamon said, jaw grit. “But when the time comes, your little reign of popularity will end, and everyone will see. I am the stronger alpha. This pack is mine.”

Soren’s hackles rose at the direct challenge. He felt his fangs extending, claws suddenly digging into his palms.

“We will see,” he gritted out.

“Come on,” Eri said, shooting Soren a dirty look.

Her brother and Kamon followed her. Soren didn’t look to see where they had gone.

At his side, Botan, patted his shoulder.
