Nikolai reached up, stroking his fingers through Soren's raven hair, watching the way the moonlight streaked across it, turning it blue.
“I love you,” he whispered.
Soren dropped his head against Nikolai's, shutting his eyes.
He took a soft breath, seeming to inhale the moment before opening his eyes and fixing that enchanting gaze on Nikolai.
“I love you too, Nik,” he returned. “In this life and the next and all that came before us.”
CHAPTER18
ANDREY
Andrey buzzed with excitement. He couldn’t wait to see Nikolai and Soren again.
The castle had seemed so quiet since he had been brought back. Recovering in his bedroom alone after two nights under a pile of puppies with Enkai there to keep watch over them all… As much as he would never admit it out loud, he had wished for that the whole time he was recovering.
Feeling safe and cared for while simultaneously feeling like he would not be judged had been amazing. His stay with the White Water Pack had been liberating.
Swallowing, Andrey forced those thoughts away as he approached the watch tower.
That was not his life to live. It was Nikolai’s and he was happy that his brother had something so special although he did miss him.
Looking out over the land, a grin pulled Andrey’s cheeks at the sight of the carriage just reaching the castle grounds.
He turned, rushing down to meet them at the front door.
Perhaps, if he summoned enough bravery, he could request another visit.
***
SOREN
Traveling by carriage was odd.Soren couldn’t decide if he liked it or not. He was so used to running places on foot that sitting in the box while it was moving made him feelantsy.Especially considering that there was a driver and two horses doing all the work for him…
“Relax,” Nikolai chastised.
He even reached out and physically took Soren by the shoulders, massaging them down to a reasonable spot.
“Don’t worry,” he said, continuing to rub them. “My parents will love you.”
“That’s not—” Soren started to argue and then realized that, yes, that probably had a little bit to do with his nerves.
He sighed softly.
“It feels weird to leave the pack.”
“They can take care of themselves for a bit. Botan was happy to take charge. Besides, you heard them,” Nikolai said. “They want us to enjoy ourselves, they practically pushed us out the door—so to speak.”
Satisfied with the looseness of Soren’s muscles, he sighed and leaned against him.
“I still can’t believe you never told me that newly mated couples get honeymoons!” he complained for the hundredth time. “Of course, a honeymoon at my parents’ house—whether that be a castle or not, is not exactly ideal. We should plan something special.”
Soren chuckled. They didn’t call it a honey moon, just private time, but Nikolai had been shocked and delighted that they got to plan another getaway. Meanwhile, Soren had been anxious about leaving his newly appointed pack already. He didn’t want to make a habit of not being with them, but a getaway with just the two of them would be lovely too.
He glanced out the window, watching the world move by serenely. They were about to enter another town.
The humans lived in such different ways from the wolves… Selfish as it was, he was glad that Nikolai had taken to their way of life so completely.
