“That means we broke the spell.”
“Okay.”
I still wasn’t sure whether I should trust her. So many people I love have been withholding the truth from me for so long. What if this was just another thing that would backfire? I was falling for Sylus big time. And if he couldn’t be my mate, I’d shatter into a million pieces.
“Are you sure, Moon Goddess? Sylus can be my mate now—like for real? There aren’t any other hurdles to dash over, hoops to jump through, or wait for the other shoe to drop?”
“I can prove it to you.”
I raised a brow.
“How?”
“Hug Sylus.”
“She doesn’t have to tell me that twice!” Sylus said as he wrapped his arms around me. Within seconds of our connecting with each other, a silvery-pink light surrounded us all.
“This is the color your shield should have always been. The silver represents me and the power I bestowed upon you both at birth.”
“Okay. I still don’t think I follow.”
“The pink represents your power as a Luna, Sesi.”
I looked around us in awe. The light was so beautifully buoyant, moving every time my hands did. It was a gorgeous, deep, dusky pink, my favorite color. I giggled with excitement.
“I can’t believe we are doing this! This is so dang cool! Wait, will other werewolves be able to see this aura shield?”
“Only if they are a werewitch.”
“I see.” I bit my lip, deep in thought.
“What’s the matter, princess?”
“Isn’t it obvious, Dad? If the aura is this easy to spot, it must only be used as a last resort. Using it too early could give away our position in any battle.”
“Princess, let’s not worry about stuff like that right now. We won over Accius.”
I let out a sigh and shrugged.
“Yeah, for today at least we have, but Accius has friends.”
Sylus reached for both of my hands and pressed his lips to each of my knuckles. The sensation instantly calmed me.
“And this is why you will make a great Luna. You are always thinking ahead—something a great warrior does for her pack.”
CHAPTER 17
Happily Ever Maybe
The drive back was almost a blur. If it weren’t for the stops for gas and Sylus hugging me every time he helped me out of the backseat of the car. I wouldn’t have realized how many states we’d crossed.
Yes, Sylus and I drove back together in the same car—but Zhang and Joker came back with us, too. I couldn’t help but think our dads wanted babysitters for us. They were just as weirded out about our blatant PDAs as we were. It wasn’t like they hadn’t seen us hugging before, but now, everything was different because we had lifted the curse.
It was probably a good move to drive in a separate car from us because we’d been holding hands the entire ride. Even Zhang was making jokes about us being all loved up. And Zhang didn’t strike me as the type to tell a lot of jokes.
Everything seemed to be falling into place for the two of us—right? One could hope, I guess. Still. I can’tshake the feeling that this battle with Accius isn’t over. I looked out the window, convinced something in the road was ready to tear us apart again.
The feeling kept gnawing at my stomach, bubbling to the surface the closer we got to the inn. I buried my head in Sylus’s chest, closed my eyes, and took in his fresh citrus scent, hoping his essence would calm the growing turbulence in my stomach. I tugged him closer to me while letting out a shaky breath.
