“Why?”

“Well, because that’s work, and I’m sure you want to maintain a certain persona there. And I respect that, which is why I’m trying to stay as professional as possible. But Cam,” she lowered her glass and palmed his cheek. “I must admit that I’m sensing a pull, too.”

Camden smiled at her, and his stomach did a backflip for probably the fourth time in her presence just this afternoon.

“That’s good to hear.”

“Uh! Not so fast! Just because I am attracted to you, it doesn’t mean that you and I should scratch that itch. I work for you, Cam. First and foremost.”

Camden lowered his eyes. It was the last thing that he wanted to hear from her. He was the boss, and because he owned the building, he didn’t think anyone should tell him how to act with the woman he felt such a powerful attraction to. Then a thought hit him like a wave crashing onto the sand—why not be honest with her?

“Look, Cass, I don’t normally take my new employees out for what I consider dinner. Sure, some might consider this a late lunch, but it’s my dinner because I’m up for the Tokyo markets.”

“I understand. Cheryl already told me you don’t normally do this. And Tokyo, huh? My father—well—he’s more like my sire, I guess. I haven’t seen him in 6 or 7 centuries, but he’s originally from Japan. As a vampire, at least. His human self lived in England.”

“You’re the one soul human that Alec sired?”

Her eyes grew to saucer-length proportions again.

“I guess? I didn’t know that I was the only one he sired. When I was his fledgling, I only knew him, Drake, and Auntie Lil.”

“Did you know that your Auntie Lil, Dracula, and Alec invested with my companies and me?”

“No, I didn’t.”

“They have. And now? You’ve proven to be an invaluable employee to me. But? You are also something more. How about we make this dinner what it really kinda is? Let’s call it a date, and we can see where this goes?”

“I guess we could do that? I mean, technically, this was a date, to begin with, even though you disguised it as something else. But what if this date turns into something more? Like a date number two?”

“How about we figure that out when it comes to date two—huh?”

“Okay, fair enough. I guess.” She said with a chuckle before continuing. “Never in a million years did I consider dating a boss before.”

“I’m glad you are considering it now.” He said with a smile.

Within a few quick minutes, they were at the front entrance of Delmonico’s. The driver opened the door for both Cassidy and Camden, and they got out onto the sidewalk.

“I’ll call for you when we are ready to head back, Sam.”

“Excellent, sir.”

Camden offered his arm out to Cassidy.

“Shall I escort you in now that I’ve confessed to this being an actual date?”

Cassidy smiled and linked her arms around him.

“Sounds good to me!”

They headed into the restaurant, and the hostess escorted them to a table towards the back of the restaurant that seemed a bit more secluded from the other tables in the open floor plan. A couple of chandeliers were in the middle of the restaurant. They had plain shades to them—nothing over-the-top fancy. And frankly, she would have expected a little more glitz for the well-known price tags for the food.

The hostess handed them both a menu and left them to peruse.

“Cass, please don’t read the menu from right to left. Order anything you like—even if it’s the porterhouse for two. This is my treat.”

“Um, thanks, but I’m vegan. The salad will be fine for me.”

“Are you kidding me right now?” He said in an incredulous tone.
