“Nah. What’s up.”
The TV had been turned off when Fayth almost got distracted when the woman woke up in the hospital after a trainwreck. Now, the darkness in the room is heavy, preventing me from making out Fayth’s facial features.
“Where do you see us in five years? Provided we can survive the aftermath of Rome’s reaction to us ignoring his request.”
“Do you love me, Fayth?”
Fayth’s body shifts and intense heat hits my face, letting me know that she’s feeling some kind of way about me calling her by her first name. A low chuckle escapes my mouth, and I pull her into my side, allowing my fingers to slowly walk up and down her bare shoulder.
“Answer the question.”
“After you tell me why you’re calling me, Fayth.”
Smirking, I fight the urge to rifle her feathers more than they are. “Is that not your name?”
“Not for you, but of course, I love you. I’ve been in love with you for years. What’s your point?”
My chest expands as my heart skips a beat at her words’ firm and steady confirmation.
“Okay. Trust that no matter how loud Roman’s tantrum is, my five-year outlook involves rings and many vacations with just the two of us.”
“It sounds like a plan, but only if we can live free. While I have thoroughly enjoyed tonight, I don’t want this to continue as our relationship’s framework.”
Sighing, I nod because loving Fayth and hiding her from the world feels wrong and less than she or I deserve.
“Okay. Let’s throw caution, fears, and other feelings to the wind and converse with Roman. I’m ready to drool over you in front of the world. I’m ready to let everyone know that lovefound me. Hell, I’m ready to let Rome know that his sister’s allure has me in a chokehold.”
“You’re not the only one. Sneaking around like teenagers is diabolical. I don’t know how people do it. I’m on the verge of a panic attack whenever Rome calls my phone.”
Boisterous laughter shoots from my belly because I can totally see Fayth’s scary ass struggling to lie while talking to her brother.
“For real. I’m too cute for stress lines. How soon can we get this over with?”
“Stress lines or not, you are still the baddest woman this side of Heaven.”
“Awe, baby. That’s gonna have me sucking your dick in a minute.”
“Focus, Lay,” I tell her laughing.
“My bad. Go ahead.”
“How about we have the conversation at the upcoming cookout your mom is having? Maybe the large gathering will force Roman to contain his temper tantrum.”
“Or tear Mom’s backyard up as y’all throw jabs like the heavyweight title belt is on the line. Are you sure about this?”
For a minute, I ponder Fayth’s statement because the last thing I plan to do is fight my best friend, especially when it won’t stop me from dating his sister.
“Yeah, I’m sure. Hiding out is not conducive to moving forward with our relationship. Besides, you’re worth whatever outcome comes because I’m not giving you up.”

The girl is a freak
The girl never misses a beat, yeah, yeah.
?
Giggles escapemy mouth while watching my mom, aunts, and the people in their generation dancing to this old song. It never fails that this is one of the songs Mom has to play during her cookout festivities. My head bobs to the music as I fight the urge to surrender to the beat by moving my body. A broad smile is onMom’s face as her arms move from left to right inches away from her face. When Mom’s best friend, Vivienne, drops it low while snapping her fingers, I nearly burst the lining in my stomach from laughing so hard. Aunt Vivienne, as Rome and I call her, is built like a toothpick on crack and has no business attempting to get low.
