Jayden raises his eyebrows. “You could have refused to race me.”
“Fuck off. You know I can’t resist a challenge,”
He hums, leaning closer. “It’s one of my favourite things about you.” I swallow, hating the vulnerability of his comment. “It also turns me on.”
I gasp, my skin burning despite the cool air inside the arena.
“How about a bet?” Jayden asks, his tone sly.
“What do you have in mind?”
“Loser has to get on their knees and be at the mercy of the winner.”
I dart my tongue across my lips. Jayden Allen on his knees for me haunts my fucking dreams. Heat scorches in my veins, surging straight to my core.
“You’re on,” I whisper.
The girls call out, counting us down. As soon asgoleaves Maddie’s lips, my body jumps into action. I stick low to the ice, pumping my arms to pick up the speed. I heave in deep breaths, the end in sight.
Jayden lingers next to me, though, and no matter how hard I try, I can’t shake him. The edge of the rink is within reach, I stretch out, but Jayden and his freakishly long limbs touch first.
The girls groan with me, their jaws dropping in disbelief. I’m glad they put their faith in me.
“It’s okay, Willow. You tried your best.” Ebony says.
My bottom lip quivers. “Thanks, Eb. Good work today, girls. All of you are future stars.”
The girls twirl on their skates, relishing in the praise. Their parents wait on the edge of the barrier, and many girls say goodbye and race over to them. I begin to pick up the cones scattered across the ice.
A smile curls on my lips. Today was fun. The past couple of months, my passion for hockey has crept into my life again. I thought after this year, it would be easy to leave competitive hockey behind, but these girls have reminded me why I love the game.
There is one girl left on the ice who is talking to Jayden. I roll my lips into my mouth, not wanting to smile.
Valerie is quiet and unassuming. I don’t think she smiled for the whole lesson. But right now, her smile could light up the darkest night. Jayden has knelt to her level, his eyes soft and patient.
I pivot, unable to watch any more. Why does he have to be good with kids? It’s annoyingly adorable and I fucking hate it.
I grumble, picking up the last cones from the passing drills. Coach said to leave the goals out as we have training later tonight.
My phone buzzes against the side of my leg.
Jayden Allen:
Meet me in the supply closet
I gasp. Holy shit. I spin around, finding myself alone in the arena. How the hell did he leave so quickly? Shaking my head, I skate off the ice and change into my runners.
Knots tangle in my stomach as I approach Jayden. He is leaning against the closet door, a smirk plastered on his lips.
“What are we doing here?” I ask, though I’m confident I already know.
Jayden licks his lips, closing the space between us. I inhale sharply, his hot breath dancing down my neck. Jayden hasn’t even touched me, yet I’m on fucking fire.
“I won,” he murmurs into my ear.
“You did.” The words are breathless.
He twists the door handle, his head nodding into the small space. “Inside and on your knees.”
