My eyes widen, knowing this is a bad idea, but I can’t help myself. “If that’s okay with Jay Jay, I would love to.”

I meet Jayden’s eyes, a glint sparkling inside them. “Sure.” He agrees.

Daisy’s cheers consume Books and Brews as Jayden and I share a not-so-secret look. A smile pulls on my lips again. This time, I don’t bother to hide it.

“Thank you so much for doing this,” Mae says, panting as she runs around the living room looking for her shoes. “Daisy! Have you been wearing my high heels?”

A short silence is followed by a string of giggles. Daisy runs out of the hallway, straight for the couch.

She is clutching a pair of black pumps while being chased by Jayden, who has a smile plastered on his face. It’s so bright that I can’t look away. It is strange to see Jayden smile, but when he does, it’s fucking magic.

I inhale deeply, relishing in the domesticated sight we have found ourselves in. I’m lounging on Mae’s chestnut couch, watching Daisy and Jayden run circles around each other. Though they have taken a break for now, as Mae is about to leave.

“Daisy girl, I’m heading off now.”

Daisy skips to Mae, who is crouched down, ready for a hug.

“Bye, Mummy. Have fun. I love you.”

Mae smiles. “I’ll see you tomorrow morning, okay, baby?”

After Mae leaves, Daisy drags Jayden and I into her bedroom. The walls are cream, pictures of her and Mae hanging on them in pink frames. Speaking of pink, the colour is everywhere, from her bed frame to comforter.

Daisy’s stuffed animals have taken their place at the tea party, their cups already full.

Jayden pulls out Daisy’s chair first, then does the same for me. I smile, muttering a thank you.

“That’s something a prince would do.” Daisy beams. “Wait, you need crowns.” She strides across to her costume chest, pulling out two gold crowns with pink and blue plastic diamonds. “You are now the king and the queen,” Daisy says, placing the crown on my head, then Jayden’s.

“Now, kiss!” A bright smile on her lips.

I falter, my jaw dropping. “Daisy,” I mutter.

“What?” She says, lacing her hands together and rocking back on her heels. “That’s what happens to the princesses in the movies.”

What movies has she been watching?

I let out a shaky breath, and my eyes dart to Jayden’s face, hoping to steal a glance. But he is already looking at me. A lump forms in my throat, and I swallow. I edge closer to Jayden, the chair creaking underneath me.

Closer.

Closer.

Fuck.

“We shouldn’t,” I mumble, while licking my lips. “It’s against the rules.”

Jayden’s throat bobs, his chest rising quickly. He inches closer to me, reaching out to graze my cheek. Daisy’s cheers are background noise, yet as Jayden brushes his thumb over my lips, I can no longer focus on anything else.

“I won’t tell anyone, if you won’t?”

I nod, skin flaring as Jayden’s hot breath brushes against my lips. Fuck, it’s hot in here. Or is that me? Shivers shoot up my spine, my eyes fluttering shut.

Jayden rests his lips against mine and every part of me wants more. He tastes like spearmint; a forbidden fruit that I need to devour.

Jayden’s hand cups my neck, before slowly pulling back. He visibly swallows and his green eyes don’t leave mine. I want to steal another kiss–press my lips against his and never come back up for air.
