She licked her lips. “So, I’m with you?”

“That a problem?” I raised an eyebrow.

I was rewarded with one of her bright smiles. “No, I think maybe a cage full of half feral animals is the perfect place for you.”

Smart ass.

She could joke all she wanted, but deep down I think she knew the truth. The fact was that I’d stop a bullet to keep her safe if it came down to it. Then, once the danger had passed, I’d have her to myself.

Chapter Six

Hannah

Iglanced in my rear view mirror for the hundredth time since I’d left the rescue. I was driving home, with an SUV full of animals and a motorcycle tailing me.

My lips pulled into a smile when I thought about being under MC protection. I was an independent woman. Being single at thirty-five kind of made that a necessity. But, I didn’t feel equipped to handle this. I knew nothing about criminals, dog fighting, drugs, all of it. Being independent didn’t mean doing everything myself and consequences be damned. Sometimes it meant calling in an expert, so that is what I had done. Granted the police would have been the most logical experts to call, but I was glad I had the MC’s help.

I gave myself a silent pat on the back for accepting help when I needed it. Why Moose was offering help was another question. I knew the MC had their own beef with these guys. Or they thought they did, anyway. More than that, I suspected Moose, for all of his bravado and attitude, had a thing for little old me.

How the hell I had attracted the eye of a tatted up badass biker like him I had no idea.

Maybe we had more in common than met the eye. I made it my mission to protect the innocent. The innocent being animals. But he did the same thing. Sure the MC probably didn’t make all their money in a way they could declare on their taxes but thatdidn’t mean they didn’t keep the community safe. Moose had raised his hackles at the idea of some awful people coming after me and my rescue. So maybe we weren’t so different after all.

Having him in my house and shadowing my every move would be interesting to say the least. I had always dated guys who were a little more on the suit-wearing, Sunday-dinner-with-mom side of things.

He was not that.

The focus should be on the rescue, on catching the bad guys and getting back to my mission to save animals. Of course, that mission wasn’t always twenty four seven and I couldn’t think of any better stress relief than a full body, core shaking, toe curling orgasm that could only come from tattooed callused fingers and a deep sexy voice.

I flipped on my blinker light and slowed to turn into my driveway. I had the dogs in the back seat but there was no way all the cats could come home with me.

Moose pulled his motorcycle in behind my SUV and was at my door before I could even open it.

“What’s the plan for the mutts?”

I swatted his arm. “They are not mutts. They’re babies.” I kissed the end of Daisy’s nose and handed Moose two squirming pups. “We can set them up in the bathroom to the left of the front door. They were comfy there last night.”

I grabbed Daisy’s leash and the other two pups and followed.

“This is nicer than my bedroom,” Moose said, looking around at the thick quilts I’d laid out for the dogs. The room wasn’t huge so we were standing close enough I could smell the distinct engine grease and leather smell of his cut.

“They deserve it,” I gave each dog an ear scratch, fed and watered them, then closed them in for the night.

“I don’t think they are as picky about where they sleep as you think.”

I pursed my lips. “You complain, yet you still help me get them set up. I think you’re a big old softy under all this muscle.” I gave his bicep a squeeze.

He took a step closer and ran his eyes slowly from my sock feet to my lopsided ponytail. “I’ve got good motivation to follow directions.” He smirked as my cheeks got redder then left the bathroom with his trademark swagger.

Oh my goodness.

I fanned my face. It took a lot to distract me from my job, but he was making it look easy.

After I closed them in for the night, I walked back into my living room to find Moose checking all the windows and closing my curtains. “Everything looking okay?”

He turned back to me and nodded. “Locks and outdoor lighting is the best we can do. If they get past that, then they have to deal with me.”

I nodded then yawned. I really should be terrified given the events of the last few days but I was too exhausted to feel much at all. “I’m going to go have a shower,” I said.
