Hannah wrinkled her nose. She was still getting redressed, and I wished more than anything to keep her naked all fucking day. “What about the cats? I can take the dogs to my place butthere are too many cats to load up and it would stress the poor things out.”
I put a hand on either side of her face. “All I care about is you. We have to keep you safe.”
She laid a hand over mine. “That is really sweet, but I care about the animals, so if you care about me, you need to understand where my priorities are.”
I let out a breath.Fuck.“Alright, you want to stay here tonight, then?”
She nodded solemnly. “I know it’s been broken into before, but so has my house and your garage. I have that camera over the front gate now, the gate locks, the door locks and I have a badass biker to protect me.”
“Yeah well this badass biker is prone to distractions.” I gave her chest a meaningful look and her cheeks flushed.
God, I would never get sick of how she responded to me. I liked to think I had some skills and sure, I’d made a woman scream from time to time. The club bunnies had motivation to stroke my ego though. Hannah’s response was real. No porny, fake screams, just nerve endings firing with my every touch.
She laughed. “Let’s get the pups inside and settled in. Who are these guys, anyway?” she asked as she scooped up a puppy and handed him to me. “I know you can’t tell me everything, but–”
“It’s okay. Two of them were Prospects for the club years ago. Crash and Jinx. They have a bone to pick about not getting patched in. They think they can just recruit a bunch of scum bags, call themselves a club and kick us out of our territory. We know there are more guys working with them.”
“Why dog fighting?” Clearly just the idea of it had her on edge, but she deserved the truth.
“Money, mostly. Connects up with drugs and weapons and other shit we don’t let in this town. They seem to think if they getthe dogs back, they can set this whole master plan into motion that will end with a harem of women and them the kings of Jackson Ridge.”
She nodded without blinking. “Dangerous, then.”
It wasn’t a question, but once we had all five dogs inside and the door shut, I answered anyway. “Dangerous? Yeah, but no more than any of us in the club and as far as we can tell, we have them outnumbered and know where they are.”
She nodded, her eyes glued to where Daisy was making herself comfortable in an oversize dog bed.
“It’ll be okay, Doc. Let’s order some dinner and get comfortable for the night. The guys’ll let us know how it’s going.”
Hannah went through her end-of-day routine with the animals while I wandered the perimeter, checking over everything until our pizza was delivered.
Just as we were finishing up eating, I got a text. “Looks like they have more guys than expected. Ten or twelve,” I told Hannah, trying to keep my voice even so as not to freak her out.
She pulled her knees up to her chest where she was sitting on the couch. “What are they going to do?”
“The plan hasn’t changed. We still have the element of surprise.”
She nodded.
All we could do was wait. Hannah busied herself with the animals again. A nervous habit I suspected, while I went back to pacing.
I knew what time the guys planned to hit the warehouse. Not being there was a unique kind of torture, but I was where I needed to be.
Twenty or so minutes after the hit was supposed to go down, my phone vibrated in my pocket.
Chapter Fourteen
Hannah
Moose’s phone went off and he pulled it out to read the message. He had one hell of a poker face, but I was starting to be able to read him.
Something was wrong.
“What is it?”
“Some of the guys escaped.”
The blood drained from my face and I looked over to where Daisy was snoozing, more peaceful than I had seen her since she’d arrived.
