Dean’s chest heaved, and for a moment I was sure he’d defy his alpha, but then he tucked in his chin and strode off across the street.
Grayson sighed. “I’m sorry about Dean.”
“Not your fault.”
His jaw tensed. “My beta, my responsibility.”
Tor made a sound of agreement.
I slipped my hand into his and smiled at Grayson. “No harm done. We should get going. We’re meeting Ursula at Lumiers. It was really nice seeing you again, Grayson.”
I tugged Tor past the loup alpha and toward the café, desperate to get away before something else happened to upset the balance.
I’d brought my ancient dire wolf, alpha shifter mate into loup garou territory. And thank goodness we’d bumped into Grayson and not another pack loup. We might have his permission to be here now, but my gut told me it was best to hurry the fuck up and get out of the city.
I pushed open the door to Lumiers, eager to get inside, and moths bloomed to life in my stomach, dark wings beating so hard they stole my breath.
A face filled my mind. Chiseled and cruel. Emerald eyes cutting shards.
“Cora? What’s wrong?” Tor slipped his arm around my waist and guided me to the nearest empty table.
By the time my ass hit the seat, the moths were gone. But one word hovered on my tongue, accompanied by a sense of foreboding I hadn’t felt in a long time.
“Cora?”
I met his gaze. “Jasper. I think…I think he’s in trouble.”
Chapter Seven
Jasper
The warlock has obviously gone insane. “What the hell do you mean they want my blood?”
“To drink,” Elijah says.
I roll my eyes. “I figured, but why mine?”
“Power,” Conah replies. Then to Elijah, “They fed off you too, didn’t they?”
“They weren’t impressed.” Elijah coughs. He sounds sick. Weak. Totally unlike the man I’ve come to know. “Although my blood did seem to revitalize them a little.” His boots scuff the floor as he stands straighter before glaring at the shackles on his wrists. “These fucking things suck.”
Conah grabs hold of the rings bolted to the wall and tugs. They hold fast.
“Supernatural strength is muted too,” Elijah says with a sigh. “They’ll come soon. Be ready to fight and try to get out of here.”
“We’re not leaving you,” Conah says.
“Speak for yourself.” I arch a brow. “We did our part. We came to get him. This is over our heads.”
“What?” Conah says. “Is the great Jasper scared?”
“No. I’m being realistic. If they have this kind of magic, we have no idea what else they have.”
Conah puffs out his cheeks. “We’d never have been able to sneak into this place. They were always going to have the upper hand.”
“They were supposed to be too weak to do much,” Elijah says. “That was the plan.”
“A lie, obviously,” Conah says. “One of them attacked Cora a few weeks ago, didn’t he?”
