As soon as I make it to Katherine, I grab her, adrenaline consuming me, and throw her to the ground. And I don’t stop there, dropping to my knees, letting it all spill out of me, my arms flailing, hitting her repeatedly, yelling as I do.

I feel unhinged. Crazy.

“Amelia!” Rob appears, pulling me off her, bellowing my name over and over, as I fight against his hold, not knowing much but knowing I want to cause her pain. I want to hurt her so badly.

“You will stay away from him!” I scream, the sound bloodcurdling.

“Amelia!”

“Stay away or I’ll make sure the police come after you for attempted murder.”

Katherine’s face falls.

“Oh Jesus,” Rob breathes from behind me, restraining me. “Amelia, calm the hell down.”

“Do you understand me?”

“Yes, yes, she understands you,” Rob answers for Katherine as she drags herself to her feet, looking dazed, shocked, a tidy scuff marring her cheek. Did I do that? “She understands,” Rob says, releasing me, blocking my path to Katherine, hands up as he backs away.

I blink and look around, willing my mind to catch up with what’s happening. Where am I? What’s going on?

“That’s enough.” An officer grabs me and pulls my arms behind my back, and I fight with him too. “Miss Lazenby, calm down!”

My breathing is shot to bits, and I relent, my adrenaline drained. “Let me go,” I yell, blinking back flashbacks, the sound of screaming tyres piercing my ears.

“Just calm down, okay? This isn’t helping.”

I heave, my body rolling, as I’m held in place, and another officer approaches Katherine, her face concerned.

“I’m fine,” Katherine murmurs, her wary eyes on me.

“You have quite the mark here.” The female officer motions to the scuff on Katherine’s cheek. “This is assault. Would you like to press charges?”

“No, no, it’s fine, just a misunderstanding.” She covers the mark. “I’m leaving.”

The officer nods, and the one holding me releases my arms slowly, as if bracing himself to catch me when I fly at Katherine. “Amelia,” he says, using my first name as a paramedic moves in. “You need to be checked over.”

I stare at the officer. He has a kind face. Soft features, an uneven beard. “What?”

“Come.” The paramedic puts an arm around me, leading me towards an ambulance.

“Where are we going?”

“You’re in shock.” She sits me down.

Slow down, Amelia!

I wince, feeling the force of a car speeding past me. I blink, seeing Jude’s face behind the wheel. Terror. “Jude,” I whisper, looking around, my mind a mess. I see the blue flashing lights. The chaos registers again. “Where is he?”

I physically jolt, as if I could have just landed back in my own body. “Jude?” Panic surges, lifting me to my feet. My eyes dart, and when I see his car on its roof in the distance, I nearly cough up my stomach. “Jude!”

I get precisely two steps before the male officer blocks my path. “Please, Miss Lazenby, you must let them work.”

“I need to see him.” I try to get past, but he holds my upper arms, keeping my weak body in place. “I need to see him! Please,” I beg on a whisper. “I have to see him.” My fight leaves me when three firemen ease a body out of the Ferrari. “No.” There’s so much blood. He’s limp, his arms dangling. “No, no, no, no, no!” I find a new strength, shoving the officer aside and running, my legs feeling like they’re trying to get through quicksand.

“Amelia!”

I run. I run so fast, the vibrations of my pounding bare feet shaking my body, and when I make it to the Ferrari, another officer catches my running form and holds me in place. No amount of fighting him will get me out of his locked arms.
