We take a second to sit with that. Will I ever see the people who matter again?

I glance up at the window. “Sasha, do you ever hear people outside?”

“No. I haven’t been awake much.”

I go limp. “Have you heard anything from outside the window?”

She seems to consider it for a second. “I heard one of those beeping alarms big trucks have that alert people they’re backing up.”

“Like a semi or a trash-removal truck?”

“Yeah. One of those.”

“When was that?”

“While you were in the bathroom.”

Chills scatter over my skin. Our dire situation falls into place. We’re being auctioned off soon. The alarm must have been on a moving truck. Maybe they were bringing more girls to store in the warehouse.

How many more of us are here?

Shit.

We’re running out of time.

Sasha cuts in and jerks me out of my panic. “How would a bracelet help get us out of here?”

“It’s special.”

“Because it was from your boyfriend?”

“Not just because of that.”

“Are you sure it could help?”

Something about her tone makes me latch onto her question. “Sasha, have you seen my bracelet?”

CHAPTER 10

HUNTER

“Anyone Joan Venturihas her sights set on is in a world of danger.” Aiden sinks into the living room chair. “I don’t know how we’re going to get Dori out of this mess.”

News that my mother has been moving around the city for well over a year isn’t surprising, but it does nothing to soothe my nerves.

Has she been watching Jonah, or just me?

Has my dad been in contact with her and not told us about it?

Every possible scenario spins in my mind.

Jamison buries his face in his palms as Melanie tries to console him. They’re sitting at the kitchen island as far away from Aiden as they can be in the situation. I can’t say I blame them, but being divided won’t help us right now.

I gaze out the window and take in the world below. “If the FBI was able to uncover information about my mother’s whereabouts for the past year, I have to hope they’ve found clues as to where Dorothy is.”

Aiden joins me at my side. “I don’t know. They won’t tell me anything other than they're working on it.”

I turn to Aiden. “Did they say where my mother was staying?”
