“You think she’s safe in your castle, Cross?” he cackles from behind me when I stalk towards the door. I turn, my gaze locking on his. There’s blood seeping from his nose down into his teeth, making his smile all the more sinister. “It doesn’t matter what you do to protect her, sooner or later, someone’s going to come for her, and there’s not a damned thing you can do to stop it.”

All I can do is laugh under my breath.

“Good luck.”

LEVI

I’m just saying, once the beast transformed, he wasnotthe growly man I expected, and I’m disappointed,” Mila says, washing a plate from tonight’s dinner while I dry. It’s difficult because I have to keep pulling my long sleeves down, so she doesn’t see the bandages around the rope burn on my arms.

I woke up this morning in my own bed, cleaned up with bandages on my wrists. Part of me was surprised, and I’ll admit, grateful to know he took care of me after . . . whateverthatwas last night.

The other half is angry that I even let myself get into this predicament in the first place.

Levi now knows whoever Black is sent me to find information on him, and that I did it only because they threatened him. He said he’d take care of it, whatever that means, but I still have nothing to go on when they approach me again.

“Did you hear a word I just said?”

Whoops.

“Yeah, you were talking about the Beast and how un-beastly he was when he turned back into a human.”

“That was ages ago. What’s the matter with you? You’ve been staring into space all night?”

“Nothing,” I lie. “I’m just tired.”

“I get the feeling you’re not telling me something,” Mila says, eyeing me with that knowing look. As my best friend, she’s come to learn how to see right through my lies, and I’ve got to say, it’s a nuisance.

“Well, I don’t know what it would be. I have nothing to hide.”

Mila shrugs, going back to washing the dish in her hand.

“If you say so. Just know, I’m here to talk if you need it.”

“Thanks, Mila.”

She smiles. “So, how’s Levi?”

I shake my head, lost in thought. “I haven’t seen him since last n—”

Fuckkkkk.

Mila grins, wagging her brows at me.

“I knew it.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I grumble, cheeks hot enough to fry an egg. “I was just going to say I haven’t spoken to him since the other day.”

“Is that when he left that giant hickey on your neck?”

Dammit.

“I shouldn’t have come here,” I grumble, and she laughs.

She only smirks triumphantly.

“I think it’s great. You both deserve someone worth a damn.”

“It was nothing,” I lie.
