I looked over at her, noting the serious look on her face.
“It’s easy.We reconnected at work.Found out that our breakup was a mistake, and quickly found out that we couldn’t keep our hands off one another.”I shrugged.
“I’m not telling your mother that!”Ella screeched.
I couldn’t help but laugh as her face turned red.“Why not?”
“Why not?”she repeated.
“Yes, why not?Is there something wrong with me?”I questioned.
“No!”
“Well, then?”
Ella let out a sigh.“Lucas, I’m not telling your mother I couldn’t leave her son alone. So, you better figure something else out.”
“It’s not like she wouldn’t believe it.We used to be that way with one another, in case you’ve forgotten.”
Ella shook her head.“Trust me, I haven’t forgotten.I also haven’t forgotten how much more you cared for the game than for me.If only I’d been a hockey stick, we’d probably have little mini stick children by now,” she gritted.
“You’re ridiculous.”
“I am not.I’m stating a fact.”
“Fine, you’re stating a fact.”I huffed, annoyed by her insistence I was the issue with our previous relationship ending.“Why don’t you tell me what we should tell my mother, then?Let’s see if you have a better idea?”
Ella shook her head and took a sip of her wine.“Never mind, Lucas. We’ll use your story.”
“No way.Come on, share with me some ideas.I’m sure we can find something in one of them we can use.It would help if you filled me in on what and who you’ve been doing since we split.”
“Pardon?”she gritted, her eyes narrowing at me.
I chuckled.“What’s wrong?Got a bit of a shady past since we ended?”
“No,” she said, becoming defensive.
“Well then, why not tell your boyfriend all about it?”I said, reaching out and grabbing her side, causing her to laugh.
“Stop.”She pushed my hand away so she wouldn’t spill her wine.“What time are we meeting your mom for dinner?”
“Six-thirty, we are meeting at a restaurant just downstairs.”
I watched as she glanced at her watch and then nodded, looking around.“I think I’m going to take a hot bath, get ready for dinner.”
I watched as she got up and made her way around the end of the table, watching her take that gorgeous body away from me.Once she was just about to the door, I cleared my throat.
“Ella?”
“Yeah?”She turned and looked over at me.
“Can I watch?”
She did nothing but shake her head.
“Can’t blame me for trying.”I chuckled.
When she turned away from me, I was certain I caught what might have been a small smile on her lips.
