“So,how did the meeting with his mother go? Is she one of those women who thinks her son is her man?” Pat asked as she put her makeup on.
“Not at all. I didn’t know what I was walking in on, but she’s really a nice woman. She’s in the medical field, so we were able to form more conversation because of that. She’s been through a lot in life, but it didn’t make her bitter. She also took well to Amayah. She was nice and even got her a Barbie doll,” I admitted.
“That’s good. I’m glad it was a good dinner and not an awkward one. You know how these niggas mommas can be.”
“I do. But then again, you know Brevin’s mom isn’t that bad either.”
“Girl. I won’t disrespect her but fuck her son. That man really be playing the fuck out of crazy. How you go from cursing someone out and disrespecting them on an everyday basis to being mad they moved out and moved on?”
“He wanted me to be miserable, girl. He thought I was about to be out here down bad and begging him. Another man being interested in me never even crossed his mind. Hell, another man never crossed my damn mind.”
“That shit is crazy. Not a man being into you, but just how it all happened. One minute you’re talking to this fine ass stranger at the bar, then the next you’re fucking the shit out of said stranger.”
“It is crazy, but I’m glad it happened,” I said, smiling hard as hell thinking about my man.
Over the past month, Terrez had done nothing but show up and show out for me. From gym dates to giving me money just because. He was truly a good man. Even when we found ourselves in our first argument, he was patient with me and not one disrespectful word was exchanged. The meeting with his mother happened earlier this month, but Pat and I were just now able to do some catching up.
“Let me call you right back, girl. This is him calling on the other line.”
There was no way to put a FaceTime call on hold, so even if Terrez didn’t want anything, I’d still have to call back.
“Hello?”
“What’s good, baby? You almost ready?”
“Yes. I’m ready. I just put Amayah’s shoes on.”
“Okay, cool. I texted you a few minutes ago, but you didn’t respond.”
“I was on the phone with Pat,” I stated as I went to my text thread.
Sure enough, there was an unread message from him asking for my ETA. Tonight, Terrez would be meeting my father for the first time. This was also the first time I’d be going to my parents’ home since before my mother passed away. That alone was making me anxious, but having Terrez by my side was helping my anxiety about it.
“Y’all on the phone talkin’ like y’all won’t see each other tonight.”
“You know how we get when we haven’t seen each other in a while.”
“I know. Little said he wanted to meet her.”
“How does Little know about Pat?” I asked playfully.
“He asked if you had a friend and I said yeah. He was gon’ be at the gathering tonight anyway, but I guess he gon’ try to holla if he likes what he sees.”
“I already told you she has someone.”
“Shorty got a situation, not a nigga. Seems like free game to me,” he said seriously.
“Well, I guess we’ll see tonight. I don’t think it’ll be much of anything though. Pat loves her man,” I defended.
“Then it is what it is. Hell, I don’t care for real. I’m already fuckin’ the person I want.”
“Don’t say it like that.”
“Like what? I’m only telling my truth, baby. But I’m about to pull up. You need me to come up and get anything?”
“Nope. All I have is Amayah’s bag and my purse.”
