“Talk, lil nigga,” Little said as he stood in front of Trevor.

“I…I don’t know who’s pulling the strings, but Chaos owes a debt to the Bedford Boys. I didn’t get any details about the situation, but I know that much. The day I called him to let him know it was me doing the drop, he told me he needed a favor. He didn’t wanna talk on the phone, so he met me at the park. He gave me twenty thousand to take a brick to another location. I put it in a baby bag and set it under a tree. By the time I was leaving the park, the bag was gone. After that, I did the drop as normal. The only reason the plan fell through was because of that nigga Lou. He was right there when I came in with the bag,” Trevor recalled.

This nigga was talking so low that it was damn near hard to hear every word. Now that he was speaking, I was putting two and two together. The numbers had been slightly off for a while and it was because of Chaos’ fraud ass. This may have been his first time doing business with Trevor, but it wasn’t his first time doing the shit.

“So, twenty racks was all it took for you to turn on a nigga that’s been keepin’ your pockets full for years? If I’m gon’ betray my people, it’s gon’ be for more than twenty. Thanks for the information. But the way I look at it, yo’ ass deserve to die. Women on my roster would’ve asked for more than twenty bands.”

When Little was done with his insults, he stepped back and walked out of the room. Following his lead, we made it halfway back to the room we were in previously before two shots rang out and silence followed.

“I see you kept your word,” I said to Chris when he entered the room.

“Shit, that’s all I got as a man. The only reason he was breathing this long was because I was waiting for y’all to come through.”

“How you find out he had somethin’ to do with it? It’s been days,” Little added.

“I been doing business with Kassir and Suleem since I was a rookie. Them niggas are thorough. Ain’t no way the shipment was short on their end. It’s a shame I had to put that nigga down, but it is what it is.”

Little and I stayed for a while longer and talked more business with Chris before heading out. I felt relieved that I could spend the rest of my day with Shalene. She should be home from work by now, so she’d be my first stop. As soon as I stepped out of Little’s truck, I called her but got no answer. I called again while I waited for the elevator, but this time my call was sent to voicemail. Running my hand through my beard, I tried to keep myself from getting irritated. We hadn’t made anything between us official, but I felt entitled to her time. Even without a title she belonged to me. I stuffed my phone in my pocket when the elevator doors opened. Thankfully there was no one else with me. Once I got off, I went to Shalene’s door and rang the bell she had up.

“Yes?” she called out through the speaker.

“The fuck you mean, yes? You see me callin’ you. Why you playin’ with me like that?”

“I’m on the phone. I was gonna call you back.”

“Shalene…open the damn door. You got me talkin’ to yo’ ass like we at a jail visit or somethin’.”

After a few moments of standing there in silence, the sound of the locks disengaging caught my attention. Slowly, the door opened and Shalene’s fine ass stood there in a pair of black workout leggings with the matching tank top. Her rose gold Beats were resting around her neck and an empty water bottle was in her free hand.

“You about to hit the gym?”

“I just got back. I got off work a few hours early, so I went when I got off,” she explained.

“Why you ain’t call me and tell me you were gettin’ off early? I would’ve gone with you.”

“I thought you might have been busy. Plus, that was a last-minute thing. I didn’t plan on leaving early.”

“How that happen anyway? Just the other day you were tellin’ me you had to work harder than a Mexican.”

“You get on my damn nerves,” Shalene laughed.

“Shit, I’m serious.”

“One of my coworkers thought she was on the schedule, but she wasn’t. She lives an hour away, so she really wasn’t trying to go home. I let her work the rest of my shift since I’d already gotten my hours for the week. I got the next three days to relax and lounge around.”

“That’s what’s up, baby. What you in the mood to eat tonight? Matter of fact, gone and get dressed when you’re done showering. I was gon’ wait until tomorrow but fuck it.”

Taking my phone out, I went to the website of the steakhouse I wanted and luckily, they had a few more reservation slots. Once I secured our table, I let Shalene know she had an hour to get dressed before I’d be coming back for her.

Forty-five minutes later I was showered and in a new outfit. The vibe at the steakhouse was casual, which was exactly what I was going for. I knew Shalene wanted to let her hair down, so I chose a place that didn’t require either of us to do too much. A few drinks, good food, and smooth conversation was all I was looking for. To my surprise, Shalene’s fine ass was stepping out of her apartment at the same time as me.

“You look good, sweetheart.”

I couldn’t help but admire the way she was looking. The high-rise blue jeans were hugging her every curve and the white button down tied at the bottom flowed effortlessly. A pair ofclear heels showcased her pink toes while a brown purse hung from her arm. A sleek ponytail framed her face just right while the diamond studs in her ears made her appear brighter. Honestly, I didn’t see how this woman had any ounce of low self-esteem when she looked so damn good.

“Thank you. You not so bad yourself.” She smiled.

Grabbing her hand, I kissed the back of it before leading her to the elevator and out of the building.
