Hevyn went in to wipe the gloss on her lips, but I stopped her.
“I won you a souvenir, and your kisses are mine.”
She grinned broadly at me. “You are such a lover boy, Cache.”
“Only for you, butterfly. Only for you.”
Hevyn went back to her food and swallowed after chewing. “Tell me . . . How did you get into astrology? You always have that book with you.”
“My mom. She was big on zodiac signs and people being compatible with one another.”
She nodded her understanding. “Are we compatible?”
I chuckled. “Absolutely. You’re a water sign, and I’m an earth sign. Although we’re naturally drawn to others we share signs with, I believe water and earth signs are more compatible.”
“How do you figure that?” she inquired before taking a sip of her drink.
“Check this out. Water signs are nurturing, deeply connected to their feelings, emotionally intuitive, and deeply sentimental. You all lead with love and your emotions. Whereas earth signs are more grounded, logical thinkers, and always focused on stability and structure.
“Water signs and earth signs complement each other. Virgos, Taurus, and Capricorns need water signs to help them navigate their feelings, be more emotionally open and aware, and help alleviate a lot of the overthinking that earth signs do. Cancers, Pisces, and Scorpios could benefit from earth signs because we’ll help to ground that person more, show them how to think more logically instead of emotionally in certain situations, and provide them with the stability and structure they might desire. How do you feel about what I said?” I probed.
“Hmm. It was easy to follow you, and I understand where you’re coming from. I’ve never been into zodiac signs though. It’s not my cup of tea, but what I appreciate about this conversation is how knowledgeable you are on the subject, and the way your eyes light up when you talk about zodiac signs. It’s refreshing. I would love to hear more, love.”
Hevyn made me blush again. She had a way with words and expressing herself. I ain’t never felt like this before. She damn near had my thug ass ready to sing in the rain. Hevyn was a Cancer like my mom, and slowly, the wheels turned in my head. She could possibly be the one to help heal my heart.
June2025
Hay and I were on our way to the brunch spot to meet up with Bryte and Rusha. We were a few weeks behind for our girl’s brunch day because of everybody’s schedule. Today was for us to catch up with each other and see how we were all doing mentally, emotionally, and physically. I appreciated our times like this.
I’d spent years listening to them conversing about the plights and joys of womanhood, and now that I was seriously considering dating Cache, I needed their advice. Hay pulled into the parking lot of the restaurant and parked next to Bryte’s big ass truck. Tread always made sure she didn’t want or need foranything. Seconds later Rusha pulled in right next to us in her truck.
Her truck was just as huge. My big cousin Bravo was half a man until Rusha came into his life. He’d lost his first wife, his girls’ mom, and Rusha stepped in, breathing life into him and his girls. Their wedding was set for the end of the summer, and I couldn’t wait to get into my bridesmaid dress.
Rusha had such great taste. Our dresses were beautiful. I couldn’t wait to hear all the wedding updates. Haylow and I climbed out.
“Hey, y’all, hey!” Rusha squealed, pulling both of us into a tight hug.
“Hey yourself,” I replied. “You look so beautiful with your wedding glow.”
“Aww! Thank you, babes. I’ll surely take that compliment because I feel exhausted and drained from planning our wedding.”
“It’s a lot going on, but you got us, sis, and you know we’ll help however we can,” Haylow responded.
Rusha beamed. “I appreciate y’all so much. Let’s get up in this place so we can listen to Bryte’s bossy self tell us about the importance of being on time.”
We all laughed because she wasn’t lying. Hay and I followed behind her and entered the restaurant. The hostess greeted us and led us over to Bryte. She looked up from her menu and rolled her eyes.
Bryte sighed. “Do any of you understand the importance of time?”
“Girl, relax. You act like we’re an hour late. We’re barely ten minutes late,” Hay voiced, taking the seat next to her big sister.
“Hay, hush. I already know you late because you had to smoke yo’ morning blunt, which clearly made my baby Hevyn late. Do better, big head,” Bryte stated, pulling me in a tight hug.
I took the seat next to Bryte and Hay rolled her eyes at me. She made me laugh. Hay was such a spoiled brat, and I told her to hurry up, but nope she had to get one blunt in. The sisters were always on each other’s cases. That was just them. Bryte pushed Hay to make better choices for her life, and Hay constantly stated how uptight Bryte was even though she got consistent dick.
“Bryte, I swear you act more like my mama than my big sister,” Hay shot back. She picked up her menu and scanned over it.
Rusha walked up and intervened, cutting Bryte off from responding. “Yes the hell she does, Hay. However, in my best friend’s defense, she is the oldest sister and that’s how they act. You two have way more in common than y’all know. Now are we going to enjoy our brunch together or what?” Rusha queried, hugging Bryte around her neck.
