Eat her alive, Pea. That’s my girl.

“Oh, please. He was practically begging me to.” Darcy briefly closes her eyes, smiling, “Iwasgoing to compliment you since we both have a desire to make decent meals. But it sounds like someone is still bitter.”

She looks Paisley up and down, then glances at me with a sinister grin.

“I’m not bitter!” Paisley exclaims, tossing her can into the sand with force.

Her stance had changed now. She stood with her legs shoulder-width apart. The wind was starting to blow fiercely, too, making this look like something out of some soap opera. I could feel the energy shift, too. Darcy was picking on her, and it’s not a competition that Paisley can compete in since the guy is taken. I kind of want to let it go on for a minute before 65

she punches her. I’m almost wondering how far it might go.

“I can’t be bitter when I have no reason to be.” Pea balls her fists up, “In fact—I have someone of my own!” she musters up.

My eyes widen as I snap my head at her. So does Nick’s.

“Who?” we both say, eyeing each other afterward.

Paisley quickly looks around before snatching my hand and clearing her throat.

“Josh, duh!” she grips my hand tighter. “Remember, babe?

I guess we’re going public…” she laughs nervously.

What universe did I transport to? And how the hell do I press the pause button? Did I miss a few scenes?

I didn’t even have a second to process the current situation.

Her hand just squeezed mine, tighter and tighter, as if she was scared for her life. Darcy purses her lips like it’s the worst Christmas present she’s ever received, and Nick? Well, he looks just as confused as I. If I give her a second, maybe she can explain because I can’t.

“There’s no way you don’t completely disgust this man.”

Darcy crosses her arms, looking at Nick, “Do you believe this?”

Nick looks at me, “Yeah. I do.”

What’s that supposed to mean?

“Prove it.” Darcy nods to us.

Paisley looks at me, tucking her hair behind her ears as she lets go of my hand, facing me. She then grabs my bare arm, turning me with dominance. As confused as I was, something kept telling me to play it cool and go with whatever was about to happen. If it makes these two morally challenged psychos go away, then fine. I want to enjoy my summer carefree.

Paisley included.

MELTING

“Paisley, I’m-”

I question her actions, being cut off by the sweetest taste of strawberry lime pressing against my lips. Her soft fingers begin to tickle the nape of my neck as she pushes her body against mine, reeling me into the kiss even more. I couldn’t be more enthralled than I was. Suddenly, my eyes were locked shut, and I felt like I’d been caught on the calmest wave there ever was. The way her lips moved against mine—it’s as if she already knew what to do. I can’t do anything more than melt in her embrace.

Before I could let myself want more, it was too late. Her lips abandon mine, but her hands don’t. My eyes can’t even open.

I don’t know if I can look at her after that.

“See?” Paisley whips her attention on Darcy and Nick,
