It was terrible before, but my sense of direction feels more swayed than when she left the first time. She supports me differently now. Her words have new meanings to them. It wasn’t as apparent to me how unprepared I was to go back to the way things were until now.

“What on Earth am I going to do without you?” I whisper, holding my face back from kissing her.

“Be happy,” she says, rubbing my thigh. “Don’t cry about this. It isn’t worth it.” Her lips connect with mine quickly and she dries my watered eyes, catching any tears before they fall.

I’m going to bawl when she leaves. That’s not a threat, but a promise.

She sits beside me, still rubbing my thigh. “I know that you 323

“Being with you means being honest in everything that I do. When I gave you that ring, Paisley, I gave you my word. I intend on keeping it.” I take her hand back, holding it in mine.

She lifts our hands, kissing mine.

“So…have you talked to Beau?” She brings her legs up to sit pretzel style.

“You can say that.” I exhale through my nose. “He saw me at the beach. I may have told him to fuck off until he gets his shit together.”

“Ah…” She nods, with widened eyes, looking back down.

“You know, it’s a shame he got a second chance and he’s blowing it by reversing his progress,” she says in a worried tone.

“We’re old enough to know what we’re doing, Pea. Beau knows what he’s doing,” I respond, looking over at her packed suitcase right behind us.

She glances at me, then double-takes, moving the object over and out of the way. “Hello,” she sings. “I’m not gone yet.

Relax.”

Not yet, but I’m in pain thinking about it. “Sorry. It’s all I can think about…”

“Well, let’s go out. We can go surf?” She raises her eyebrows, suggestively.

“You know I won’t say no to that.” I let out some deep, short laughter.

“I know.” She grins, sitting on her knees and wrapping her 324

arms around my neck. “Before we go, though, why don’t I give you something else to think about?” she whispers, inching her face at mine again.

“Oh yeah?” I mumble as she kisses me just as my words escape.

She pulls herself onto my lap, slipping her tongue right into my mouth as she eases my body back on the bed. Her hair falls on my face as she continues to kiss me like she can’t get enough at once. My body doesn’t go against her wishes. I glide a hand to her ass, squeezing it as I kiss her back. There was nothing she had to make me think more than I was. I was already about to have a fit with her pushing her hips against my waistline. I throw my arm up above us, pushing her suitcase further away and rolling her over so I’m on top. I can feel her giggling against my lips when I do.

“I need room…” I grumble against her lips, slipping two fingers into the waistband of her leggings to gain access with my hand.

Pulling my lips away, I take a breath and throw my head into her neck, dragging my tongue along her soft skin, bringing my lips to a suction.

“Mm, your tongue is so big. I want it inside me.” She lets out a feathery moan.

She’s going to regret saying that if she lets me get any further. Sucking harder, my lips let go of her skin after it becomes warm, leaving a bright red bruise. I push her shirt up, kissing her stomach, making my way down to her hip bones, pulling her leggings down lower. The tan lines from her wearing a bikini

were the first thing I saw.
