Sex with men and women kept my endorphins pumping. I’d thought Barney would keep me satisfied this trip, but no. He had refused to take me from behind. It really bummed me out, actually. Not that I didn’t enjoy him, I just needed more.

Tonight, I was hoping to meet someone new to mix things up.

Finishing off my second scotch on the rocks, I noticed a beautiful redhead entering the pub. Every chair was occupied at the bar, except for the one next to me. She had no choice but to take it. And she did.

“Hello, she said.”

“Hi,” I replied.

“I’m only here for a drink.”

I lifted my glass. “Me too.”

She smiled, then ignored me. Waving down the bartender, she ordered a glass of white wine and sipped it slowly. Either she didn’t actually like wine or she couldn’t afford more than one glass, and was making it last as long as possible.

My guess was that she didn’t drink often. She looked like a million bucks and could afford anything her little heart desired.

I pretended like I was busy on my phone. Why give her the satisfaction of admiring her stunning beauty? She saw herself every day in the mirror and knew she was drop-dead gorgeous. Perfect ivory skin. Lovely manicured nails.

And she smelled delicious. Mojave Ghost perfume was my guess and it happened to be one of my favorites.

In my free time, I liked to hang out at department store perfume counters, sniffing the expensive scents. It was also a great place to meet a pretty woman for a hook-up.

“You’re not from around here, are you?” she asked in her lovely British accent.

“American.” I tapped my chest.

“Are you here on business or pleasure?”

“Both. Why only work and not play?”

“Agreed. Life is heavy enough and we should treat ourselves well.”

I raised my glass. “Amen to that. I’m Toby, by the way.”

“Evie.”

“Wanna go fuck behind the building, Evie?” There I was, jumping one hundred feet ahead, to get right to the point of why I’d come to the pub.

She gasped, eyes wide. “Sir! Well, I—”

“Just thought I’d take a chance. Have a good evening.” I put a fifty dollar bill on the counter for both of our drinks, then left.

Sure, I could’ve used my credit card, but paying with cash made a bigger statement—in my opinion—when seducing a person. Nowadays, everything was digital. I liked to be old-school to change things up.

I stepped out into the cool evening air and paused. Should I go right or left? I still wanted to meet someone, even a brief encounter would suffice, to help me recover from Ms. Evie taking the wind out of my sails.

Normally, I wasn’t so sensitive, but dammit, I was lonely tonight.

“Wait!” Her familiar voice tickled my ears from a few feet behind me. She’d reconsidered my proposition and came after me. “You didn’t give me a chance to answer.”

A cocky grin stretched across my face. Things just got a lot more thrilling and my endorphins were back to chugging along like a well oiled machine.

I pulled myself out of my reverie, just before the worst moment of my life roared back. There were more important things to worry about, like finding the bomber and getting through to Grizzly.
